Instructional Procedures
Introduction We will be using the computers today to read an informational text. We will talk about the key ideas and
important information using Wh questions in the text as well as discussing vocabulary.
Oral Pretest Define vocabulary - on their own (First time no help, second time ASL and TC)
Show them the vocabulary list on the board. iPad, phones, hand-held device, YouTube, Netflix, websites,
KidSay, Disney, Nickelodeon, Hulu, Smarty Pants, preschoolers, kindergartners, kids, tweens, teens, special
channels, Amazon, popular, and vlogs.
What words do you know?
Record Data What are students oral and signed responses? Use results to help guide pre teaching of vocabulary
Pre-teach Vocabulary - Practice spelling, reading, saying, and signing vocabulary Developmental Activities
Reading the Informational Text

Students will practice logging on to the computer
Students will go to the www.NewsELA.com website.
Read the story https://newsela.com/articles/cordcutting-biz/id/13445/ at a Lexile level of 420L on their own.
Discussion of the text
We will discuss the text, key ides, and identify Wh questions.

Student will follow the directions and take the online test

If necessary, I will read/sign it to them a second time.

Formative/Summative Assessment

Formative - Group discussion and answering of questions about the vocabulary words and the reading assignment.
Summative Assessment Pretest and posttest on vocabulary words. Using www.newsela.com the students will be able to
answer questions regarding the text. A quiz and writing prompt feature with the reading assignment.

Data Analysis and Reflection on Planning/Instruction; Plans for Re-teaching (as applicable)
The data collection of classwork, pretest and posttest (the students formative and summative assessments results) will
determine if additional teaching is needed for mastery of objectives and standards.

This website provides current articles, which can all be adjusted to the students Lexile level
