Case: You Got the Promotion
Out of the two possible responses, I would not say anything to Mindy. Although Mindy
may seem more qualified to me, the upper management has a reason that I was placed into my
current role. It would not be right to promote Mindy to a staff position just because she was
qualified. However, because she is well connected within the department, it would make sense
for me to still communicate with her and keep a professional relationship.
Regarding the subordinate who is confused on who to report to, it would be most efficient
if the subordinate were to continue to report to Mindy until the completion of the project. If the
work on the project was going through Mindy initially, taking over the project without any
background knowledge would potentially be detrimental to the success of the project. Once the
current project reaches its conclusion the subordinate would begin reporting to me or the person
in charge of the project.
