Before even coming to Alma College I was determined to major in Psychology.

Learning how the mind works and how different environments and actions can trigger a
certain response from a person fascinated me. When the time actually came to register for
my fall classes I had decided athletic training was the route I actually wanted to take but
shortly after taking a couple classes, I realized athletic training was not the place for me.
It was not until taking my first communication course, Speech Communication, that I
realized my interest in the major.
The following semester, I took Dr. Diels Human Communication course where
we looked at different theories and modes of communication within different sized
groups. If there was one course that I had to choose was the deciding factor in declaring
the major, that would be it. It gave me an insight on how communication is a vital tool
not only for professional use, but also in every interaction with another person. I have
learned that different environments, situations, or events all call for different
communication channels and strategies.
Getting ready to leave Alma I have noticed how much my written, and oral skills
have all progressed greatly since I first arrived. I now feel confident with the tools and
knowledge I have gathered to enter the professional field knowing what it means to be an
effective and good communicator. I plan on landing a career as a Public Information
Officer for a police department or city hall. All my experiences through sports, clubs, and
events I have participated in have helped to contribute to the person I have become.
