1. In class, when were students most alert and participating most actively?
Students were most alert when they were gathered around a table, listening and watching the teacher's
demonstration.
What percent of the time would you say they were on task?

75%

Off task25%

2. How did students respond to teachers instructions?

After receiving instructions the students typically took a minute or two to get to their seats, organize their
materials and get to work.
3. What forms of peer interaction did you observe?
Boys generally talked with the boys, and the girls generally talked with the girls. The teacher organized the
classroom so that boys and girls were evenly distributed, mitigation some of the inevitable noise.
4. What are the students wearing? What do you notice about their appearance?
The girls wore jackets or tops and sometimes t-shirts and mostly jeans. The boys wore sweatshirts or t-shirts
and nearly all of them wore jeans.
5. What sort of things seemed to motivate them what did they do or talk about with enthusiasm?
They were very motivated by humor. The teacher often told jokes to get their attention and keep them
interested. Also, at the end of a productive class period, the students are sometime rewarded with a short
game at the end of class.
6. What do you see as their greatest strength at this age?
At this age their greatest strength is their energy. Also, they are beginning to reach the age where they
really discover what activities they enjoy doing.
7. What would be the greatest challenge they would present to you as their teacher?
It would be difficult for me to harness all of their energy into one specific task.
8. Sum up your reflections on this experience and think of the possibility of your teaching students at this
age. Be honest with yourself. How do you see your personality/character traits working with this age group?
Why do you feel this way? If you WERE going to teach this group, what things would you set as goals for
yourself?
I've always been torn between teaching High School and Middle School art. Teaching High School, I would be
able to help students develop a passion they have already discovered. Teaching Middle School, I could help
students discover their passion.
