School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 3rd grade

# Of students: 15-20 students

Equipment and Facilities:

Safety Considerations: One must be careful when on

the asphalt or the grassy area. A student can trip, fall
and get hurt. All students need to make sure that they
are paying attention over the course of the whole
lesson and all students have enough room to engage
in the activity without getting hurt. The students must
also make sure to be paying attention during the
lesson and focused so a ball does not hit them.
Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies: For every lesson, the
Previously Learned Skills: football catching and
student that is not behaving properly will first receive throwing, basic defensive and offensive skills
a warning and a reminder that the next time he or
she acts up he will have to sit out. If the student acts
up a second time, he will be asked to sit out. If a
student sits out twice over the course of the lesson, he
or she will be sent to the supervisor.
Teaching Strategy: The strategy that will be used
Academic Language: two-hand touch, hands-up, eye
over this lesson is a teacher director strategy. In this
on ball,
instance the students will learn how to perform the
skill from the teacher and then practice the skill with
their classmates.

involved in football.
H-R Fitness (H): The students will be able to maintain moderate to vigorous physical activity
for 50 percent of the lesson.

Instant Activity:
Hello class! We are going to start class
today with a little categories type of
game. Everyone will be standing in a
large circle and one person will have a
football. I will shout out a category, for
example holidays. The person that has
the football must say an item or thing
that falls under the category and throw it
to someone in the circle. That person
must then say something within the
category and throw the ball to someone
else.
Transition students will be allowed a one
minute water break
Set Induction:
Hope everyone is having a great day! We
are going to continue our units of handtouch football today and possibly get into
some game play. Can someone remind
the class of what we learned and
practiced last week? (catching and
throwing of the football)
Purpose:
The purpose of todays lesson is to learn
the basic positions of throwing and throw
and catch the ball while moving. All of
this is extremely important in hand-touch
football.

The students will throw the football to the
student next him or her and back and
stop when they get to the cones on the
other end of the grassy area. The
students will practice this at least 4 times
or until all of the students have
completed passing the ball to each other
while moving without stopping.
Demonstration Plan:
I will have three students demonstrate the
skill while I explain what is going on.
Questions to Check Understanding
What is important to remember when
throwing the catching the football? (Pay
attention to where you are going) What
should the eyes be focused on when
running down the field? (where the
football is)

groups of three practicing their
throwing and catching with
partners.
Teaching Cues for Task 1:
Throwing:
- hold ball near back
with fingers over laces
- elbow tight to body and
ball up near ear
- point ball towards
target and non
throwing arm/foot
towards target also
- bring arm forward,
follow through and
release
Catching:
- be prepared with hands
up and fingers in
triangle shape
- keep eyes on ball
- bring ball towards body
if need be
Common Errors Task 1:
1. students not paying attention
when throwing ball
2. students not properly
throwing or catching ball (not
remembering cues of skill)

quarterback. Everyone will stay in their

groups of 3 with one person that will be
throwing the football, one person that
will be receiving the football, and
someone who will be defending or trying
to block the ball from getting to the
person who is receiving. Each person
will rotate in playing each role. Once a
pass has been completed and the
receiving person properly catches the
football, then the group will rotate so
everyone has a chance of playing each
role. The importance of this is for
everyone to understand and practice the
different roles that are involved in
football.
Demonstration Plan:
I will explain the drill and chose a group
of 4 students to demonstrate while I
explain the drill.
Questions to Check Understanding
What are the three positions in which we
are practicing for this drill?
(Quarterback, running back, and
defense). Why is it important to do this
drill? ( so everyone has a chance to
practice the different roles involved in
football)
Adaptations
Students that are having more difficulty
with the drill can move closer to their
quarterback or they can practice
throwing and catching without defense.
People that are mastering the skills can
have the running back move around a
greater space.

Running Back:

quarterback can throw

Defense
- block the running back
or person trying to get
ball
- stand between the
person throwing

person trying to catch

Common Errors Task 2:
1. student blocking the running
back will not also be looking at
the quarterback
2. student that is throwing ball
(quarterback) will not be
patient enough to wait for
running back to get open.

CLOSURE:
minute Review: Okay class I hope everyone had
s
fun today! On Thursday, we will finally
move on to game play and actually play
some hand touch football. Can someone
tell me what we want to focus on when
running and throwing the football?
(make sure the other person is ready and
eye on the ball). Can someone also tell
me the football positions we practiced at
the end of class today? (quarterback,
running back and defense). Okay Have a
great day and I will see everyone on
Thursday.
