Self Study: Fluency and Comprehension Intervention Overview

I. Focus Area: Title one fluency and comprehension skills.


II. Goal: To improve Tier 1 student skills in the areas of fluency and comprehension and get
them nearing grade level.

IV. Length of study: 8 weeks
V. Data:
Data was collected through weekly comprehension tests and through fluency folders,
which tracks words read per minute on a given selection.
IV. Strategies Implemented:
Tracking fluency with red, yellow, and green crayons.
Readers Theatre
Weekly Phonics Poems
Whisper Phones
High Frequency Word Cards
V. Results
Students that made the most improvement in comprehension scores increased their skills by
59 percent, 24 percent, and 22 percent.
Student 1 improved by 50% by the end of the 6th selection. Student 2 began at 28 wpm and
ended between 46-52 words a minute. Student 3 began at 33 wpm and was reading 46
words per minute at the end of the study. Student 4 began at 3 words a minute and finished
at 25 words a minute. All of the students in this study made progress in the area of fluency.
VI. Benefits and Challenges of Study
Benefits of the study included: increased enthusiasm for reading; friendly self-competition
and evaluation; increased comprehension scores; improvement among words per minute.
Challenges included having interruptions during the 20-minute intervention time. Many
students are pulled for push-in math or other intervention areas that make the 20 minutes a
valuable time if the full time can be enforced.
