The Kings Speech Film Clip Scene Analysis

Notes for Analysis: When analyzing film technique, you should consider how the technique enhances the plot or heightens a characters emotions or
brings out a viewers response.
For instance, how does the sound (or lack of) fit what the characters are doing or enhance the time period? Consider the lack of sound when George VI
gives his war speech: the lack of sound reflects the seriousness of the speechs topic (war), and the director wants you to ONLY hear the kings voice, but
WHY does he want you only hear the kings voice? WHAT does that show you about the king? About Lionel?

a certain exercise.

Flash Reverse Shot; Lionel and

Bertie had a scene with dialogue, so

This shot was established because it

would make sense to show Bertie and

were sitting next to each other. It

shot to show the reaction between Bertie
and his wife. Berties wife was speaking
to Lionel and she would often look at
Bertie to see if she going in the right
direction with what she was saying. You

have. You can also see that they are very
close, and the way that Berties wife is
usually doing the talking for Bertie.
Lionel is often seen this type of way in
the clip, being able to only his waist up.

4.

Long Shot; Bertie was giving a

speech to a crowd, it showed his
full body, head to toe, showing all
his body language while he was
speaking.

The director used this shot to show the

full body of Bertie while he was
presenting his speech. This could be
because the director wanted the
audience to see his body language and
maybe the body language of the people
listening to him.

1.

High key; most scenes when they

were in Lionels office contained
high key lighting. The scenes in the
office were flooded with light.

2.

Top lighting; while in the office

natural light from the windows on
the ceiling were shining down on
the characters.

1.

Eye-Level; Most of the scenes

portrayed an eye-level angle
instances when each character in
the clip were speaking.

The main purpose of high lighting is too

see everything clearly. There are no
shadows or nothing. The light is just
everywhere in the scene.
This is the lighting that comes from
above and shines down on the subject.
This lighting can produce a shadow
most of the time it does not. In one of
the scenes the light was shining down on
Berties face and you able to see his face
clearly, this also be used to focus on
subject, which is the subject under the
light.
This angle is too look directly at the
subject. When Bertie was in Lionel
office mainly he spoke and an eye level
angle, it wasnt under or above the
normal level. This can also cause you to
focus on his face.

can closely see the expressions on their

face as each one of them were speaking.
We can also feel the way they were
feeling judging on the tone of their voice
and through the expression on there
face.
The director most likely chose this shot
so that we as the audience can see the
body movement of Bertie. If we look
close enough you can notice that Bertie
was tapping his foot, which lead to a
close up shot on his feet only. You can
also notice how the crowd is reacting to
the Speech that Bertie was giving, they
were all looking at each in questioning.
This scene was shot mainly to see the
body language of Bertie and how the
crowd were listening to his speech.
This type of lighting was mainly used to
be able to see all the detail that re in the
different scenes. In most of them the
light is more flooded than others.
The director possibly used top lighting
to take away some of the shadows that
may have been produced without it. This
can also make the audience feel the
sunshine and cheerful feeling,
depending on the light.

Eye level angle is used to depict the

facial expressions of whose speaking or
who the camera is on. This angle is used
to also make us, the audience, feel how
the character is feeling. Facial
expression plays a major role in this

angle.

4.

Dutch Angle; this type of angle was

displayed when Bertie was giving
his speech and the crowd was
looking at him in an awkwardly
way

1.

Zoom; the camera movement often

zooms in on Berties mouth when
he was completing the exercises
given to him by Lionel.

The people were looking around and

each other in confusement on the speech
that Bertie was giving. The stuttering
caused them to not understand him fully
and clearly. So this angle was used to to
show the non-understandable facial
expression on there face.
Zooming is often used to focus on some
closely or something that a distance
away, the subject can be already on the
screen, but is zoomed in to see great
detail or zoomed out to see it farther
away. While Bertie was doing one of the
mouth exercises it zoomed in on his
mouth, to see the type of exercise his

Bertie and his wife were standing on the

podium while the audiences were
standing on the ground looking up to
him while he was giving his speech.
This angle gives a sense that Bertie has
higher power than everyone in the room,
because the camera was looking up to
him as well as the people.

In this scene of high angle does not

portray him as person with less power,
or someone that is weak. This is just the
camera above normal level looking
down at him do the exercise.
While Bertie was giving his speech, the
director used dutch angle on the crowd.
It was used to show how confused the
people where. His stammering caused
them to not understand fully. This is the
main use of this angle. We as the
audience can wonder what it was like
listening to someone with high power
who couldnt talk by watching this
particular scene.
This movement was most likely being
used to focus on what the most
important subject in the scene. We can
see that Bertie was taking place in some
mouth exercises, so the camera was then
zoomed in from close up on his face to a
close up on his mouth. The director also
used this type of movement to zoom in

mouth was doing.

Dolly; dolly was used while Bertie

and Lionel was performing the
exercises. It was used to also switch
the scenes of the different exercises.

The director used this type of movement

to be able to switch the different scenes
without cutting or any other type of
editing.

3.

Panning; this type of movement

moves along with the main
characters while they were moving.

This technique is established in the

scene to make sure the audience are with
the subject. If the subject leaves the
scene and the camera stays on the scene
until the subject comes back, this bores
the audience. While Bertie was rolling
in one of the exercises the camera
moved with him all the way through.

The director probably used this type of

angle to show what the character is
doing at the exact moment. It was also
used to bring different subjects to
different scenes.

4.

Mobile Camera; when Bertie and

Lionel were jumping around for
one of the exercises that they did,
the camera was moving with them
and also in between them.

The scene would be much better if the

camera was moving with them. If the
camera was sessile while they were
jumping around, the scene would have
no interest.

The camera movement makes the scene

more interesting, we can feel like were
there literally. We can see that Bertie is
trying to cure his slurred speech because
he is putting in a good amount of effort,
and is doing whatever it takes.

2.

and out to switch the different exercises

Bertie was doing.
Bertie was performing the exercises
with Lionel and the camera would move
in and out to change the scenes of the
different exercises they were doing. We
can see by judging on the exercises that
Bertie was slowly improving, and Lionel
methods were a lot but helpful.

The Background music sets the

mood of the scenes put together. It
keeps the audience in tune with the
Diegetic Sound; After it gets a little bit

any type of dissolving or fading

The background music is really used to

set the mood for the audience and how
they should be feeling. We can see that
instrumental being played is more of a
hard working type mood, it motivates to
work. Bertie seems to be working quite
hard to reach his goal, and the music fits
in.
We can see that while Bertie was doing
the exercises, it would also flash to
where he was giving the speech to the
people, and then it would come back to

him doing the mouth exercises. While it

was jumping from scene to scene there
wasnt any fading or dissolving.

2.

3.

Focus

Flash cutting; the duration of most

of the scenes are very short, and are
switched out with other short
scenes.

The director used this specific type of

editing because each scene lasts a
certain amount of time. It wouldnt
make sense if the camera is on Bertie
speaking and after he is finish speaking
the camera is still on his face. The
audience will be lost, and scene would
mess up the clip

Cross cutting; the scenes changed

between Lionels office and the
factory that Bertie was giving his
speech in.

This type of editing makes it easy to see

the improvement of Lionels teachings.
From switching back and forth from the
room of the speech and the office where
he would practice at. It makes the scene
more interesting, by giving a little bit
from each occasions.

Rack focus; The camera mostly focused on

anything that was in the foreground, for
instance while Bertie, Lionel, or Berties
wife were speaking its focused on their
face, and blurred out anything in the
background.

The established this technique for most

of the scenes to be able to focus on what
was in the foreground. This helps the
audience fully understand what I going
on with the subject.

The director wants to give a brief

showing of the scene just to keep the
audience in tune with whats going on.

This type of editing took place when

Bertie was doing the exercises with
Lionel and when he was giving the
speech in a factory to the people. This is
to show that audience of any
improvement that Bertie could have
made, while doing the exercises that
Lionel has provided.
The director has the camera focused on
only the subjects in the foreground. The
clip also showed that camera was
focused on the foreground which was
Bertie and Lionel and focused while
zoomed in on the couch behind them.
This allows the audience to focus on
what the camera is focused on but
blurred out the things in the background.
