The International Museum of Art

Ideas and Values

Geographical Influences

The ways people involved in a particular historical event

thought about life.

The difference time and place made in a particular historical

event.

The museum was built to explain what the Mexican

Revolution was and to display artifacts from Africa and Asia,
because most of the natives in El Paso did not know much
about the outside world and the El Paso Fine Arts
organization wanted to change that.

The museum was built in the Turney Mansion which was

built in 1919, William Ward Turney lived in this house with
his wife, Iva Turney. She was the woman who deeded her
home to the city of El Paso in 1940. This house is important
because it was designed by Henry Trost which was one of
the main founders of the Trost and Trost architecture
company.

Social Issues

Cultural Issues

The ways people involved in a particular historical event

related to each other.

The ways customs and traditions of people Influenced the

developments of a particular cultural event.

The museum was established in the Turney mansion which

was owned by the fairly rich Mr. and Mrs. Turney. They both
helped plan recreational events such as the Sun Carnival also
known as the Sun Bowl Art Exhibit. This already made them
very well known in the city, so planning out the museum had
all of El Pasos support.

Back in the 1900s, museums were usually filled with art

pieces by famous artists. The International Art Museum was
almost the opposite. It had many more artifacts than
paintings until Samuel Kress donated hundreds of European
art pieces making the museum just like any other would be.
