Caged Bird
By Maya Angelou

A free bird leaps

on the back of the wind

and floats downstream

till the current ends

and dips his wing

in the orange sun rays

and dares to claim the sky.

But a bird that stalks

down his narrow cage

can seldom see through

his bars of rage

his wings are clipped and

his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.

The free bird thinks of another breeze

and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees

and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn

and he names the sky his own

But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams

his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream

his wings are clipped and his feet are tied

so he opens his throat to sing.

The caged bird sings

with a fearful trill

of things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill

for the caged bird

sings of freedom.

TPCASTT
Title: Before reading the poem I thought that it would be about a bird captured in a cage.
Paraphase:
Stanza 1: A free bird flies and floats downstream, then puts his wings in sunlight and
claims the sky.

Stanza 2: A caged bird is angry, he is bound, but he is going to sing.

Stanza 3: The caged bird sings a fearful song for things not known and he may be heard,
and he sings for freedom.

Stanza 4: The free bird thinks of another breeze, there are fat worms waiting, and he
names the sky his own.

Stanza 5: The caged bird dreams of freedom, he is still bound, but sings again.

Stanza 6: Exactly the same as Stanza 3.

Connotation:

Metaphor: EX: line 26 and he names the sky his own. line 11 through his bars of rage

Stanza: 6 of them.

Rhyme: EX: lines (9,11) (16, 18, 20) (19,21)

Enjambment: EX: lines 1, 2, 3, 4, (a lot of it,)

Refrain: EX: The caged bird, The free bird,

Stanza is used to separate the two stories about a free and caged bird.

Metaphor is used to create visual imagery so you can see the two birds in your mind.

Refrain is used to get the point across that the caged bird will never give up hope.

Attitude:

The Attitude of the poem is Angry, but also triumphant and hopeful at the same time. This
is because there are 2 different stories. For the caged bird, there is anger but also hope.
his bars of rage, and the caged bird sings of freedom. Demonstrate these attitudes.
And for the free bird there is triumph. And he names the sky his own. Is an example.

Shift:

The poem shifts 3 times at stanzas 2,4, and 5. because of 2 different tales. Stanza 1:
Triumphant.

Stanza 2: Angry/hopeful. Stanza 3:Angry/hopeful. Stanza 4: Triumphant. Stanza 5:

Angry/hopeful. Stanza 6: Angry/hopeful.

Title:

I was partly right, but there is also a free bird.

Theme:

I think the theme is: Just because you are not where youd like to be doesnt mean you
cant show pride or not give up hope.
