EDUC 230
Lesson Plan #1
Subject: Math
Grade: 3
Duration: 30 Minutes
Indiana Academic Standards:
3.C.2: Represent the concept of multiplication of whole numbers with the following
models: equal-sized groups, arrays, area models, and equal "jumps" on a number line.
Understand the properties of 0 and 1 in multiplication.
Objectives: Students will be able to answer multiplication problems with the numbers
2 and 3.
Prior Knowledge: Students should already have an understanding of multiplication
and understand how to represent problems using equal-sized groups of cubes.
Materials: dice, counting cubes, worksheets, beepers, stickers
Procedure:
The teacher should begin this lesson by demonstrating multiplication by 2 and 3 using
cubes. The class will need to know how to represent multiplication problems with cubes
for the review activity. The students will then work independently to complete two
different worksheets: one for multiplying by 2 and the other for multiplying by 3. Each
student will need one dice and 30 cubes. The worksheets will contain equations with
missing parts.
Example: 2 x ___ = ___
To complete each equation, the students will need to roll the dice and write that number
in one of the partially written equations. Then, using the cubes, the students need to
group the cubes to represent the equation to help them find the answer. The students
should continue until they finish both worksheets.
Adaptations/Extensions: To adapt for students with ADHD, beepers will be used and
set to go off every three minutes. If the student is on task when it beeps, they will
receive a sticker. The student will then place the sticker on a treasure map. When the
stickers reach the treasure, that student will receive some sort of incentive (library
pass, iPad time, etc.). The beeper will help to keep the student on track and the
incentive of a sticker and reward when the map is completed will give them something
appealing to work towards.
Assessment of Students: The teacher will informally assess the students by walking
around and observing them while they work independently to practice multiplication
problems with 2s and 3s. The worksheets will be graded when completed.
