COLLECTIONDEVELOPMENTPOLICY
INTRODUCTION
Middle
School Libraryandalsoasasourceofinformationaboutpoliciesandproceduresofthelibraryto
others of the learning community. The collection development process encompasses selection,
acquisition, evaluationandmaintenanceofmediacentermaterials. The policywillbereviewedannually
inorderforthepolicytochangetomeettheneedsofchangingprogramswithintheschool.

DepartmentofEducation,thelibrarymediacenteroperatesonaflexibleschedule.Flexible
access
tothelibrarymediacenterallowstheuseofthelibrarymediacenteratthe"pointofneed"by
individuals,groups,and/orclassesthroughmutualplanningbythelibrarymediaspecialistandthe
classroomteachertointegrateinformationliteracyskillsandliteratureintotheclassroomcurriculum.
Studentsandteachersmustbeabletocometothecenterthroughoutthedaytouseinformation
sources,toreadforpleasure,andtomeetandworkwithotherstudentsandteachers.
Theflexiblelibraryprogramphilosophyrequiresanopenschedulethatincludesflexibleand
equitableaccesstophysicalandvirtualcollectionsforstaffandstudents.Classesmustbeflexibly
scheduledintothelibraryonanasneededbasistofacilitatejustintimeresearch,training,and
utilizationoftechnologywiththeguidanceoftheteacherwhoisthesubjectspecialist,andthe
librarianwhoistheinformationprocessspecialist.Theresultinglessonplansrecognizethatthe
lengthofthelearningexperienceisdependentonlearningneedsratherthanafixedlibrarytime.
Regularlyscheduledclassesintheschoollibrarytoprovideteacherreleaseorpreparationtime
prohibitthisbestpractice.Studentsandteachersmustbeabletocometothelibrarythroughoutthe
daytouseinformationsources,readforpleasure,andcollaboratewithotherstudentsandteachers.
Collaborationwithclassroomteacherstodesign,implementandevaluateinquirylessonscultivates
highlevellearningexperiencesforstudentsandisthecatalystthatmakestheintegrated,flexible
libraryprogramwork.Theteacherbringstotheplanningprocessknowledgeofsubjectcontentand
thestudentneeds.Theschoollibrarymediaspecialistcontributesabroadknowledgeofresources

RESPONSIBILITYFORSELECTINGMEDIA

SELECTIONPROCESS
The School Library Media Specialist has the responsibility for developing and maintaining the
Library Media Center collection of print and nonprint materials. Guidelines in material selection
include:
Ensuringthatallsubjectsinthecurriculumareenriched,supportedandstrengthened.
Ensuring that adequate educational, recreational, and informationalreading materials are
availabletomeetdemand.
Reviewingrequestsmadebylibraryusers.
Ensuring that materials are appropriate for the students and staff and reflect the global
community.
Material selection made by consideration of the review media, announcements of new
publications by publishers, user recommendations, librarian personal review, study of
bibliographiesonspecificsubjectsandexaminationofcurrentcollection.
IntellectualFreedom
Theselectionoflibrarymaterialisbasedonthepatronsrighttoread,andhisorherfreedom
fromcensorshipbyothers.Selectionsarenotmadeonthebasisofpersonalapprovalor
disapproval.Themeritsofthework,itsrelationshiptothecollectionasawhole,andserviceto
thelibrarycommunitywillbetheprimaryconsiderations.Selectionismadewithrespecttothe
ageappropriatenessofthematerialshowever,responsibilityforreadingofminorsrestswith
theirparentsorlegalguardians.
POLICIESGUIDINGTHESELECTIONOFLIBRARYMATERIALS
Theevaluationofmaterialsischaracterizedbyflexibility,openmindednessandresponsiveness
tothechangingneedsofthelibrarycommunity.Becausetheneedsofthecommunitychange,
thematerialsmustbecontinuallyevaluated.Theymustbeevaluatedasawholeandaworkwill
notbeexcludedfromthecollectionbecauseitpresentsanaspectoflifehonestly,aslongasit
isageappropriate.
Recreationalmaterialsarecollectedtoprovideenjoyment,stretchtheimagination,cultivatea
loveoflearningandreading,stimulatecreativity,supplementstudy,andprovideanawareness
ofmanydifferentideas.
Patronandstaffrequestsarecarefullyconsideredandweighedinrelationtothetotallibrary
collectionandbudget.
Giftsofmaterialsthathavenoconditionsastouseareacceptedandmustmeetthesame
standardsofageappropriatenessanditsrelationshiptothecollectionasawhole.
Duplicatecopiesofmaterialsarepurchasedtotakecareofpermanentortemporarydemands.
Replacementoflibrarymaterialswithdrawnbecauseofloss,theft,damageorwearisconsidered
basedontheavailabilityofothertitlesthatcoverthesubject,demandforthetitle,andsimilarand
morerecentmaterials.

shareitemsotherwiseunavailable.Effortsshouldbemadetoencourageinterlibraryloantoprovide
forneedsofstudentsatalllevels.InterlibraryloanusuallyoccursbetweenCMSandCHSandis
determinedbystudentorteacherneed.
WEEDINGTHECOLLECTION
Weedingrequiresthesamethoughtfulconsiderationasselection.Thegoalsofthelibrary,
availabilityoffundingforreplacementtitles,usefulnessandaccuracyofthematerialsshouldallbe
considered.
Weedingprovidesamoreappealing,uptodatecollection,guaranteesareputationforreliable
information,providesfeedbackonthestrengthsandweaknessesofthecollection,identifies
materialsthatneedrepairandmakesspacefornewmaterials.
Ingeneral,lastcopiesandoutofprintmaterialsareretained,iftheirinformationalvalueissecure.

Giftsareacceptedwiththeknowledgethattheymaybeplacedanywhereinthelibraryandusedfor
anypurposebyanyoneinthecommunity.Theywillbeplacedandweededaccordingtothepolicies
foralllibrarymaterials.Ifgiftscannotbetheymaybesubjecttodonationtolocalfacilities,students
orteachers.Giftsthataredonatedtothelibrarycannothaveconditions.
Donorsrequestingastatementfortaxpurposesmuststatethevalueofthecontribution.Giftsinthe
formofcashdonationsarealsoaccepted.Materialswillbeorderedinkeepingwiththedonors
wishesiftherequestcomplieswiththelibraryselectionguidelines.
