ProcedureforChallengedMaterials

Librarymaterialscanbeopentochallenges.Topursueaformalchallenge,thefollowing
procedureisfollowed:

1. Thechallengerisaskedtowriteaformallettertothelibrarymediaspecialist,
including:
a. Hisorhername,address,phonenumber,thedate.
b. Whetherornottheyrepresentthemselvesoranorganization.
c. Whatbookorothermaterialtheyobjectto.
d. Thereasonsbehindtherequestforreconsiderationofthisitem.
e. Whetherornottheyhavereadtheentirebook.
f. Whetherornottheyhavereadareviewofthebook.
Itisimportanttonotethatanyitemthatischallenged,mustbereadinits
entirety
orachallengewillnotbeaccepted.

2. AChallengeCommitteeshallbestruckwhichincludesatleastoneparent,one
student,onegraduateofCMS,oneadministrator,andoneteacher.Thelibrary
mediaspecialistwillchairthecommittee.

3. AninitialmeetingwillbesetfortheChallengeCommittee.

4. Atthisfirstmeeting,memberswillbeaskedtoread,view,orlistentothe
challengedmaterialsbeforetheformalhearingtakesplacetheywillbeprovided
withreviewsoftheitemtheywillreadthelibrarysCollectionDevelopment
Policyandadatewillbechosenfortheformalhearing.

5. Thehearingwillbepublicizedsothatinterestedpartiesmayattend.The
challengerwillbeinvitedtoaddresstheaudienceatthehearing.

6. Theformalhearingwillbeheldtodiscussthechallenge.

7. Thechallengerwillopenthehearingwithabriefsynopsisofthereasonsfor
reconsideringtheiteminquestion.Then,committeememberswillbeaskedto
voicetheirconsideredopinions.

8. Commentsandquestionswillbeinvitedfromtheaudience.

9. Avotewillbetakenfortheremoval,retention,orreplacementoftheitem.

10. ThelibrarymediaspecialistwillwriteareportonthedecisionoftheChallenge
Committee,sendingcopiestothechallengerandthecommitteemembers.
ThisprocedureisbasedonrecommendationsbytheAmericanLibraryAssociation.
