CRITTERS

DRAFTHOUSE FILMS
KLOWN FOREVER (2016)
Klown Forever is the latest chapter in the misadventures of best
friends Casper Christensen and Frank Hvam as they bumble
through an impressive number of poorly laid plans and disastrous social situations. When we last saw the boys at the end of
Klown: The Movie, they were riding the fallout of an ill-fated
excursion to a riverside brothel; Klown Forever picks up five
years later, with their strained friendship at risk when Casper
relocates to Hollywood. In a last-ditch attempt to salvage his
relationship with his best friend, and escape an increasingly
humdrum domestic life, Frank follows Casper to the States, and
their predictably unpredictable brand of chaos ensues, as though
Lars von Trier were directing an especially mortifying episode of
Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The Klown series has attracted its fair share of of admirers,
including actor/comedian Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat), who
has named Klown his favorite comedy ever. In their latest
misadventure, Frank and Casper inflict their particular brand of
ignominy upon several of LAs denizens, including Isla Fisher,
Adam Levine and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones).
MEN & CHICKEN (2016)
Men & Chicken is a darkly hilarious slapstick comedy starring
Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal, ingeniously cast against type)
about a pair of socially-challenged siblings who discover they are
adopted half-brothers in their late fathers videotaped will. Their
journey in search of their true father takes them to the small,
insular Danish island of Ork, where they stumble upon three
additional half-brotherseach also sporting hereditary harelips
and lunatic tendenciesliving in a dilapidated mansion overrun by barn animals. Initially unwelcome by their newfound
kin, the two visitors stubbornly wear them down until theyre
reluctantly invited to stay. As the misfit bunch get to know
each other, they unwittingly uncover a deep family secret that
ultimately binds them together.
This inventively bizarre and outlandish comedy is directed by
acclaimed, Oscar-winning director Anders Thomas Jensen and
also stars David Dencik (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.)

Fantastic Fest Presents: ALMOST HOLY (2016)

The fall of The Soviet Union threw Ukraine into a storm
of social and political upheaval. The crippled economy and
corrupt infrastructure left many children falling into homelessness, crime and extreme drug addiction. Out of this chaos and
despair a pastor from Mariupol, Ukraine named Gennadiy
Mokhnenko makes a stand by forcibly abducting homeless,
drug-addicted kids from the streets of his city and restraining
them at his private home which is converted into a makeshift
rehabilitation center. With an astonishingly beautiful, frightening and expressive visual style, ALMOST HOLY captures the
incredible story of a man going to extreme measures to do what
he thinks is right. Is Gennadiy a hero for the lives hes saved?
Or is he a crazed vigilante who has gone too far? And will he
be able to achieve his goals before Ukraine is engulfed in even
more tragedy and war? Produced with support from the great
Terrence Malick, ALMOST HOLY is the cinematic documentary experience of the year!
Prints of Darkness: CRITTERS (1986, 35mm)
In 1986, flush with the success of the first two NIGHTMARE
ON ELM STREET films, New Line Cinema launched another
fright franchise with CRITTERS. Following in the clawed
footsteps of GREMLINS (though the script was first written
and developed before that movies release), CRITTERS pits
Kansas farm family the Browns against an invasion of Crites,
alien creatures that are half fur, half teeth and all appetite. Good
thing for the Browns that a couple of extraterrestrial bounty
hunters (one of whom takes on the face of a long-haired rock
star) are on the Crites case, though preteen son Brad (Scott
Grimes) also proves to be pretty handy with creature-killing.
With a great cast of character actors led by Dee Wallace and M.
Emmet Walsh (plus a young Billy Zane in his second film, as
the dork from New York) and fun critter FX by the Chiodo
Brothers, CRITTERS is a big bite of high-spirited minimonster madness. Come celebrate its 30th anniversary on the
Drafthouses big screen!
Victory Screening: EASY RIDER (1969)
After selling a large amount of smuggled cocaine in Los Angeles,
two counter culture bikers in the 60s hide their cash in their
motorcycle fuel tanks and head for New Orleans, Louisiana for
Mardi Gras. On their road trip, they search for the meaning of
American freedom.
EASY RIDER is the late 1960s road film tale of a search for
freedom (or the illusion of freedom) in a conformist and corrupt America, in the midst of paranoia, bigotry and violence.
Released in the year of the Woodstock concert, and made in a
year of two tragic assassinations (Robert Kennedy and Martin
Luther King), the Vietnam War buildup and Nixons election,
the tone of this alternative film is remarkably downbeat and
bleak, reflecting the collapse of the idealistic 60s. EASY RIDER,
one of the first films of its kind, was a ritualistic experience
and viewed (often repeatedly) by youthful audiences in the late
1960s as a reflection of their realistic hopes of liberation and
fears of the Establishment.

LAST ACTION HERO (1993, 35mm)
1993 saw the release of two movies all about going to the
movies: Joe Dantes wonderfully wry, Cuban Missile Crisis
set MATINEE with John Goodman doing his best William
Castle impression and John McTiernans absurdly excessive ode
to action movies, LAST ACTION HERO featuring Arnold
Schwarzenegger, for all intents and purposes, playing himself.
McTiernans film tries its hardest to skewer conventions of
action cinema - with plenty of help from a script co-written by
Shane Black - yet at the same time pays utmost respect to the
act of cinephilia and what its like to be a kid, completely in awe
of the screen. Its sort of like the coming-of-age PURPLE ROSE
OF CAIRO, complete with a villain with a rather ominous glass
eye, Tom Noonan as a Jack the Ripper figure, an animated cat,
Stallone appearing as The Terminator and plenty of car chases
and shoot-outs. That it all starts o with a golden movie ticket
handed down by Harry Houdini himself, is pretty much an
afterthought. Lets jump back into the screen for 130 minutes
(and visit Blockbuster Video while were there).
Tough Guy Cinema:
LETHAL WEAPON (1987, 35mm)
Roger Murtaugh just wants to get through his last days until
his retirement, but after he meets Martin Riggs, hes just trying
to stay alive. This veteran cops gets to work out his final days
in the homicide department partnered up with the one man
rage machine hell bent on his own demise. But when the two
stumble upon a massive drug smuggling ring, theyre going to
have to learn to work together if they want to survive.
Richard Donner, Danny Glover, Mel Gibson and Shane Black.
These guys completely revolutionized the action movie genre
and forever changed it into the incredibly spectacle we enjoy
today. 26 year-old recent UCLA grad, Shane Black, wrote this
spec script that got passed around Hollywood studios before
being snatched up by Joel Silver and catapulted Black into the
upper echelon of screenwriters. Shane Black is the gold-standard
in feature film screenwriting and this is the movie that started it
all. Pity the bad guys, because this May a LETHAL WEAPON
is coming to an Alamo Drafthouse near you and youll never be
too old for this shit!
Video Vortex: NIGHT RIPPER! (1986)
NIGHT RIPPER! is an unbelievable slasher-soap-opera that
stars the Soup Nazi from SEINFELD. This is also known
as the culmination of a dream that youve never had, but wish
youd had a thousand times. Updating the legend of Jack The
Ripper in the neon-soaked haze of 1986, this movie plays out
like an episode of DAYS OF OUR LIVES that was spiked with
cologne from the set of 21 JUMP STREET. Plus gratuitous
face-stabbings. And lines like, Baby, I wish you were here to
do it to me. Featuring a synth-pop soundtrack that sounds like
an inebriated jam between Depeche Mode and someones dad,
scumbags having sleazy sex in grimy apartments, and a bizarro
climax in a mannequin factory, NIGHT RIPPER is an unheralded slice-of-the-evil-life from the direct-to-video trenches.

Mondo X Chiller: PET SEMATARY (1989)

Were giving away Mondos PET SEMATARY Original Motion
Picture Soundtrack 2XLP to one lucky winner at this screening!
I dont wanna be buried in a Pet Sematary / I dont wanna
live my life again, so sang the Ramones on their incredible
single to the 1989 big screen adaptation of Stephen Kings Pet
Sematary, directed by Mary Lambert. But wed happily live
our lives again and again if it included repeat viewings of one
of the 80s best and most unsung horror movies. In the film,
the Creed family relocate to Maine for work, hoping to find an
idyllic life ahead of them. Things go south when they discover
a pet cemetery built on top of an old Indian burial ground
behind their house. We all know these things never end well.
Stephen King adapted his own novel for the screen, which oers
a pretty bleak view of how we deal with the loss of a family
member. Elliot Goldenthals score is a superior creepy gothic
aair which adds extra despair to the already heavy subject
matter. That isnt to say that the film isnt fun, though. In its
own twisted way, PET SEMATARY rips through the running
time with plenty of grisly murders, gore, and super suspenseful
set pieces.
Temple of Schlock:
THE SEVERED ARM (1973, 35mm)
Rare 35mm screening presented by the American Genre Film
Archive! Introduced by Temple of Schlocks Chris Poggiali.
What would you do if you received a gift box in the mail with a
severed arm inside? Youd call the police immediately, wouldnt
you? Sure you would...unless you had something to hide.
Here is the story of five men with something to hide -- five
men covering up a crime so odious theyd rather deal with an
ax-wielding psychopath who wants to chop o their arms than
risk letting the truth get out. From the writers of SCREAM
BLOODY MURDER, who were apparently going through
their severedarm phase in 73, this grim shocker has been
readily available for years in a chopped and cropped (ouch!)
television version, but heres a rare chance to catch it uncut
(sorry), in 35mm, and on a big screen!
Girlie Night: SPICE WORLD Sing-Along (1997)
So, heres the story from A-Z. The Spice Girls formed in 1994
and went on to be the best-selling female group of all time, not
to mention the biggest British musical export since the Beatles.
Like the Fab Four, they released a tongue-in-cheek film chronicling a day in the life of Scary, Sporty, Ginger, Baby and Posh.
SPICE WORLD is a magical concoction of pop music and girl
power, and its impossible to watch without contributing your
own zig-a-zig-ah.
At this interactive screening, we invite you to slam your body
down and wind it all around while singing along with everyones favorite Saturday Night Divas. Your ticket also includes
a British flag and other themed props to spice up your life.
Costumes are totally encouraged, so slip on your Spiciest outfit
and say youll be there!

THE AMERICAN DREAMER (1971)

Recently, painstakingly preserved by The Walker Art Center
and released in a stunning new HD scan by Vinegar Syndrome
imprint Etiquette Pictures, Lawrence Schillers THE AMERICAN DREAMER captures Dennis Hopper at his most alternately manic and serene, following the long and controversial
production of his THE LAST MOVIE. Schillers documentary
isnt a typical behind the scenes flu piece either; here we get
to see Hopper stripped bare (in more ways than one), waxing
philosophically, shooting big guns, claiming hes a god and even
bathing with multiple women. Even though he had completed
a film titled THE LAST MOVIE, watching Hopper here, its
clear that hes attempting to direct once more - even if that isnt
his role. THE AMERICAN DREAMER feels like it actually is
the last movie for Hopper, the one where he leaves Hollywood
for good and goes o on his own mystical warpath. It captures
a very specific time and space between the freewheelin 60s
and the soon-to-be-ushered in New Hollywood of the 70s.
And Dennis Hopper was there for it all, whether the industry
wanted him to be or not.
HIGH-RISE (2015)
HIGH-RISE stars Tom Hiddleston as Dr. Robert Laing, the
newest resident of a luxurious apartment in a high-tech concrete
skyscraper whose lofty location places him amongst the upper
class. Laing quickly settles into high society life and meets the
buildings eccentric tenants: Charlotte (Miller), his upstairs
neighbor and bohemian single mother; Wilder (Evans), a charismatic documentarian who lives with his pregnant wife Helen
(Moss); and Mr. Royal (Irons), the enigmatic architect who
designed the building. Life seems like paradise to the solitudeseeking Laing. But as power outages become more frequent
and building flaws emerge, particularly on the lower floors, the
regimented social strata begins to crumble and the building
becomes a battlefield in a literal class war.
Mothers Day: SOUND OF MUSIC (1965)
Who can resist the magic of this epic musical? THE SOUND
OF MUSIC is the story of a daydreaming nun sent to work as
a governess for the recently widowed Captain Georg von Trapp.
Meeting the seven children she will look after, she finds them to
be terrors when not under the stern eye of their father. Quickly
she charms them with her songs, and even warms up to the
Captain. When she finds herself falling in love with him, she
flees, but the children insist on her return, and a happy union
is formed. But happily ever after doesnt come just yet as the
Nazis invade Austria, and the Captain is called to serve under
the Fuhrer. Wanting nothing of that, he makes his plan to get
his family to safety.
