MINERAL PROJECT PYRITE

PYRITE
My mineral is Pyrite. It has a nickname called fools gold. It is called that because of it
similar color to gold. The chemical formula for Pyrite is FeS 2. It is considered a non-silicate
because it does not have Silicone or Oxygen in its chemical makeup. Pyrite is mainly used in the
paper industry. It is also used in Sulfuric Acid. Pyrite is also used in gemstones because it makes
it look like the jewelry has real gold in it. Pyrite is mainly found in Quartz Veins, Sedimentary, and
Metaphoric Rocks. Pyrite is mostly mined in Illinois, Missouri, Peru, Spain, Russia, Canada, Japan,
Norway, Portugal, Virginia, Tennessee, and California. The biggest producers are Italy, Spain, and
Russia. Pyrite has a hardness of 6-6.5. It also has a streak of black with a slightly green tinge. Its
color is yellowish gray to gray. The transparency is opaque. It also has a metallic luster and it has
no cleavage. Pyrites density is 5.02 g/cm 2. Pyrite comes in many forms. It can come in cubes,
pyrithohedrons, octahedrons, and many more forms. Pyrite can be formed by many different
ways. For example, it can be formed by molten rock segregation, hydrothermal solutions, and
also static growth. Pyrite is formed under extremely varied conditions.
