Joe Rosenthal

Early Life
Joe Rosenthal was born on October 9, 1911
in Washington, D.C. His Interest in
photography started as a hobby during the
Great Depression. He later on became a
reporter-photographer for the San
Francisco News in 1932.

World War II
Rosenthal was rejected from the Army because of
his poor eyesight. He later on joined the United
States Maritime Service as a photographer. At the
battle of Iwo Jima, he followed his comrades into
battle to take images of the war. Rosenthal during
the battle he climbed Mount Suribachi. When he
got to the top he saw a group of leathernecks
raising the American flag. With out thought
Rosenthal took the picture. Back at those times you
did not know how the image would come out, so
Rosenthal had no idea that his picture would be one
of the most important Icon for American History.

Impact Flag-Raising
The American people saw Rosenthal
picture as a symbol of victory. His image
was printed in news papers around the
nation inspiring American Citizens. Artists
saw this image as a work of art and began
to make statues.

Personal Opinion
This image encourage the work efforts of
war. It helped Americans through a horrible
time. It inspired many. In my personal
opinion the image showed the team work
of American soldiers. It was taken at a
perfect time. In fact many claim that this
image was fake or staged. However, later
research prove this theory to be false.
