WE HAVE YOUR DATA | Comelec database allegedly stolen by hackers now available online

MANILA, Philippines Users may now allegedly see for themselves if their data was among
those that was leaked from the Comelec database last month by a hacker group.
On the website, where the URL link first appeared on social media early today, users need only
to fill in their names to sift through the database. If there is a hit, they could possibly see personal
details such as their address, birthday, passport details, parents name, and possibly in some
cases, their biometrics data.
On March 27, the Comelec website was hacked and defaced by the group Anonymous
Philippines, with another hack group calling itself Lulzsec Pilipinas announcing that it had leaked
the Comelec database on the same day.
A week later, in a blog post from Japanese security vendor Trend Micro, the company expressed
concerns about the data dump that a hacker group allegedly extracted from the Comelec.
The trove of sensitive personal data from the Comelec database now out in the open leave every
registered voter susceptible to identity theft and fraud according to Trend Micro.
Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said they are already looking into the latest database
leak incident.
In a Twitter post today, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said: This afternoon, I was made
aware that a website has been put up that essentially made the data, allegedly copied from the
Comelec searchable. The National Bureau of Investigation CyberCrime Division is now looking
into the website, and investigating the matter.
