Course Description
The basics of using a Curlin Medical
4000 CMS Pump: delivery modes,
programming, inserting an IV line, LED
indicator lights and alarms/alerts
Learner Analysis
Who are the learners: registered nurses,
novice or experienced.
What do they know: they know how to
administer IV infusion, but do or do not
have experience with using this type of
infusion pump.

Work in small groups to correctly demonstrate use
of the CMS 4000 pump
Delivery Modes
1. Continuous Infusion allows a constant, programmed rate of infusion
2. PCA or Patient Controlled Analgesia allows a continuous rate of
infusion, patient-controlled demand boluses, or both
3. TPN with Automatic Ramping - allows a level rate of infusion of total
parenteral nutritional products with the option of tapering at the
beginning, end, or both beginning and end of the infusion
4. Intermittent Delivery allows programmed intervals and rates of
specified amounts of IV fluids and to optionally deliver small amounts of
the IV fluids between doses to keep the patients access site patent
5. Variable Program - allows varying amounts, rates, and times of delivery
of infusions up to twenty-four specified programs

Alarms/Alerts
Common alarms/alerts and how to correct these issues:
Air in line prime line to release any air
Door open or set not properly installed check the
placement of the IV tubing set within the pump and readjust
as needed
Low batteries replace batteries or connect to external
power source
Alarms/Alerts (continued)
Alarm down occlusion check for any possible occlusions
between pump and patient (clamp in place, kinks in line, etc.)
Alarm up occlusion check for any possible occlusions
between IV medication bag and pump
Infusion complete the set infusion has completed, turn off
pump and disconnect from patient
