Unit: Pinch Pottery

Students Will Be Able To: Analyze the progression of pottery, compare theme-based
symbolism found on decorations to other cultures pottery, grasp the aesthetic value of pottery,
and create their own original piece of pottery using the pinch pottery technique that depicts a
modern theme.
Art History:
History of clay, firing, glazing, and techniques (Pinch, Slab, Coil, and Thrown)
Native American Coil and pinch techniques with geometric designs (1100 BC)
Egyptian coil and pinch techniques (4000 BC)
Chinese found oldest pottery - 18,000 years old pot found in Yuchanyan Cave
Greek pottery progression of design can be followed and traced significantly (Stone age
to Red Figure)
Art Production/ Goal:
Create a piece of pinch pottery that shows mastery of pinching technique
Base and walls must have consistent density to ensure even drying time
Theme depicted throughout the piece using clay tools -scratched/carved or attached on
Glazed after first firing, colors must coordinate with theme
Skills Learned/Activities:
Wedging prepare the clay for use and learn its characteristics
Pinch pottery process form a sphere then pinch the walls as desired
Designing explore the variety of simple tools to create theme based designs
Storing, Glazing, and firing techniques
Daily Art Journal questions consisting of pinch pottery critiques and process analysis
