Unit: Cool Snowmen

Students Will Be Able To: create a snowman portrait surrounded by cool color geometric
shapes that show the element of art value; students will reference Edvard Munchs winter
landscape paintings.
Art History:
Review how artists would use color to influence the temperature of their art work
o Edvard Munch painted several snow scenes
o Norwegian expressionist, 1863 -1944
o He paints snow with different shades of blue, purple, and gray
o Analyze his use of composition and color
Art Production/ Goal:
Create an individual composition of a snowman in the foreground
Surround the snowman with geometric shapes
Color the shapes using cool colors and the value scale
Skills Learned/Activities:
Demonstration drawing the composition
Demonstration and practice of value using color pencils
Discussion and accountable talk on Edvard Munchs work
Utilize the Elements of Art and Principles of Design to ensure successful compositions
Small group discussions to strengthen critique skills and review students use of the
Elements of Art and Principles of Design
