Community Outreach is defined as the donation of time or
resource to benefit a community or its institutions, such as
nonprofit, civic or community-based organizations in an effort to improve the equality of life for community residents. Community Outreach holds a very important role in the community, so the people who reside and work there will be knowledgeable about what is happening in their community, how it affects them, their input, and role that they play in it, etc. Community Outreach allows the people to have a sense of belonging, being acknowledged and not forgotten. As well as, it makes the people better appreciate their surroundings, take care of it, and become better citizens for the greater good. Therefore, it is imperative to inform/update parents on what their children are learning for every new unit. Here at P.S. 1 my fourth grade team has various strategies in place for reaching out to parents. We have monthly newsletters, that informs parents of what their children are learning for each new unit. We have Parent-Teacher Conference every Tuesday, after school. Also, we have workshops that teaches parents how to use programs like Myon, Sadlier Connect, and the different resources available for their children. As a result, of this movement it allows the parents to get involved in their childrens work and have an input in it. They are not left out. It goes beyond just dropping their children off at school; the parents have a sense of what their children are learning pass the entrance doorways of the school. This newsletter sets the path for parents to become active in their childrens work. For example, there are workshops to give parents hands on experience on how to be of assistance to their children at home, when it comes to their academics. Having taught in the school system for years I discovered that most parents has difficulties helping their children with their school work because they do not understand how to
help them. So by designing workshops that provides hands
on work to model to the parents, it will make them become confident and have a better understanding on how to service their children when it comes to school work. The newsletter is used as another tool of the teacher communicating with them.
