Fewbandscanclaimimmortalityonthestrengthof
justone45,buttheshortlivedTinternAbbeycertainly
qualify.ThemasterfulBeeside/VacuumCleaner
appearedinNovember1967,butsoldpoorly.Its
reputationhasneverstoppedgrowing,however,andin
recentyearscopieshavechangedhandsoneBayfor
over1000.TheflippantlynamedAsideisawoozy
Mellotrondippedballad,whiletherealBsideisa
stupendouspsychedelicrocksong,withoneofthe
greatestdistortedguitarsolosofalltime,courtesyof
DonSmith.Thoughmorepressappearedaboutthe
bandthanmostonesingleshotsoftheera,notmuch
isknownaboutthem.Here'swhatI'vefound.
TinternAbbeycoalescedattheOverseasVisitorsClub
inEarl'sCourt,wheresinger/songwriterDave
MacTavishmetguitaristDonSmithinlate1966.Smith
broughtindrummerJohnDaltonaftermeetinghimat
theCromwellianClubinSouthKensington,andthe
lineupwascompletedwhenMacTavishmetbassist
StuartMackayinadolequeue.Theyrehearsedat
DavidMacTavish,DonSmith,JohnDalton,StuartMackay
MacTavish'sflatinWorld'sEnd,andmadedemosof
varioussongsinthespringof1967,whichcanbeheardhere.ThesereachedtheearsofmanagerNigel
Samuel,whosignedthemupanddespatchedthemtoCornwalltogettheirsoundandacttogether,after
whichtheysignedtoDeccaandswiftlyrecordeda45withproducerJonathanWebber,probablyin

lostinJanuary,whenSmithwasaskedtoleave(essentiallybecausehewasintouppers,andtheothers
weremoreintopot).Daltondepartedsoonafterwards,andtheduowerereplacedbyColinForsterand

AllIwishfornowisthelyrics,particularlyforVacuumCleaner,whichIassumeisabouttakingdrugs:'fix

IrecallreadingsomewherethatDavidGilmourauditionedforthem.Can'trecallwhereIreadthat.Butif
true it must have happened prior to him joining Pink Floyd in December 1967. ie just prior to Smith
