Narrative
This curriculum map comes from Highland Lakes Elementary School District. The following lessons were created for the
kindergarten classrooms. The classroom varies because I am attending the SPED portion.
Mini Lesson One
Sleep
Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details
regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure. (1.W.3)

For the first day of this lesson the students will learn about the importance of sleep. The students will have to learn to sequence
what they need to do to get a good night sleep. The students goal is to be able to learn what steps they need to take to get some sleep.
The students will start with a good breakfast, physical activity, brushing teeth, and then finally sleeping. The students will use the
example for a model about how to create theirs. The students will watch the video about the proper steps they need to take to achieve
this important part of their day.

CURRICULUM MAP

The students will be provided with materials to crate their own sequence to get sleep. The students will have to show the steps
that they take to get to sleep. The students will have to explain to the class out loud why they chose those steps and why they are
important to their everyday life. This will help the students use their prior knowledge and be able to explain why they do the things
they do to get to sleep.

Mini Lesson Two

Sun Safety
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.K.1
With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
When starting the sun safety lesson the students will create a list of why sun safety is important. The class will have a
discussion about what steps they can take to better themselves and protect themselves from the sun. The students will watch the video
that the teachers shows and they will narrow down their list. The students will come up with questions to ask their teacher about what
steps they can take to take care of their skin.
The students will then read a short story that the teacher will provide them with. As the students read the short story they will
come up with ways that the character in the story couldve been more proactive about to protecting themselves. The students will then

use the materials to come up with their own short story to show the steps to take for sun safety. The students will then share the story
with their class and share key details of their classmates stories.

Mini Lesson Three

Environmental Health
Concept 1: Observations, Questions, and Hypotheses
Observe, ask questions, and make predictions.
The students will share awareness of their environment by asking questions, making predictions and observing situations. The
students will first start by answering questions about how and when they feel safe. Students will be asked to answer the questions and
to give an example of a time they came across it. The students will then discuss their different situations in groups with their peers.
Students will then watch a video about how to apply safety to their everyday life and how to make good choices that will
benefit them. Students will also work on a group project about when they should ask for help. It has been known that a lot of students
dont ask for help when they really need it and that then leads to an unsafe environment. The students will work with their peers on
steps they can take to better themselves and their future.
