Chapter 6 Lenses

Q.I) Multiple choice questions. Tick the correct answer from the options given below.
1. Which diagram correctly represents rays of light passing through a
converging lens in a camera?

2. Three rays of light fall on a converging lens as shown. Which diagram shows the path of
the rays after passing through the lens?
a.
b.
c.
d.

3. The linear magnification is given by

a. distance of image from lens upon distance of object from lens.
b. distance of object from lens upon distance of image from lens.
c. focal length.
d. None of the above.

4. Magnifying glass gives us an image which is

a. enlarged, upright and real image
b. shortened, upright and real image.
c. enlarged, upright and virtual image
d. enlarged, lateral and virtual image

5. The ray diagram shows how an image is formed by a converging lens. What is the focal
length of this lens?

a.
b.
c.
d.

8 cm
10 cm
18 cm
24 cm

Q.II) Answer the following.

1. a. Fig 1.1 is a ray diagram of parallel rays passing through a lens.

(i) State the name given to point F.

Fig 1.1

.................................................................................................................................
(ii) Which distance is the focal length of the lens?
.................................................................................................................................
b. Fig 1.2 below is another drawing of the same lens as in Fig 1.1, with an
object AX placed in front of it.

(i)

On Fig. 1.2, draw two rays to locate the image of point X. Label this point Z.

(ii)
On Fig. 1.2, draw in the image of AX, and label it image.
2. Explain Myopia (Short Sightedness)?

Q.III) Alternative to practical

1. The IGCSE class is determining the focal length of a lens.
The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1.3

Fig. 1.3
A student places the lens a distance u = 25.0 cm from an illuminated
object of height 1.5 cm. She moves the screen until a sharply focused
image of the object is seen on the screen.

She measures the height h of the image on the screen. She calculates

1
h

She repeats the procedure using a range of u values. Her results are shown in
Table 1.1.

Table 1.1

(a) Plot a graph of u / cm (y-axis) against

1
h

1
cm (x-axis). You do not need to begin

the axes
at the origin (0,0).

(b) Determine the gradient G of the graph. Show clearly on the graph how you obtained the
necessary information.

G =........................................
(c) Calculate the focal length f of the lens, using the equation f =

G
1.5 cm. Give your

answer
to a suitable number of significant figures for this experiment.

f =........................................
