Connect Activity
Instructor will show a
square and a cube. Aske
the students how they are
similar and how they are
different. Instructure will
show a rectangular box
and explain how to
measure length, width,
and depth (or long, high,
and wide). 3
measurements = 3
dimensions. How many
faces does a cube have? 6.
Instructor will show a
cube, sphere, cylinder, and
cone. Students will discuss
what flat or 2
dimensional shapes they
associate with the 3
dimensional shapes.
Using pencils and
paper the students will
practice drawing 3 D
shapes by converting flat
or 2 D shapes into 3 D
shapes.
While the students are
drawing the instructor will
talk about Pablo Picasso
and Cubism.
Picasso was one of
the first artists to
create Cubist art or
what we call
Cubism. What does

sound like to you?
What kind of art do
you imagine is
Cubist?
At first Picasso
studied a form of
Cubism called
Analytic Cubism. He
took apart objects
and "analyzed"
them in terms of
their shapes.
Then Picasso
started using
Crystal Cubism in
his art. He drew and
painted everyday
objects and figures
with many planes or
faces- like a cube or
a crystal.

Have the students draw

a multi-faceted shape like
a crystal.
Students will discuss parts
of a tree: bark, leaves and
fruit. Using a line drawing
of a tree the students will
add the parts of a tree
using the techniques they
learned earlier.
