FRIT 7331 Key Assessment: Strategic Management Plan

Section I: Description and Analysis of the School Library Media Program
Geographical Location
Americus Sumter High School (ASHS) is located in rural southwest Georgia. It
is 60 miles southeast of Columbus, 40 miles north of Albany, 75 miles southwest of
Macon, and 140 miles south of Atlanta.
Grade Levels
The campus serves only 10th through 12th grade as the Ninth Grade Academy
(NGA) is housed in a different location. Although genuine 9 th graders attend the
NGA, the 10th through 12th grade campus houses all 10th grade cohorts even if they
failed all of their classes in 9th grade. Some 10th graders are bussed to the NGA for
one or two classes they failed and need to retake rather than it being offered at the
high school campus.
Socioeconomic Makeup of the School Community
ASHS is a Title I school which means that a high percentage of students are
considered economically disadvantaged. All students receive free/reduced lunch.
Not all students actually qualify. But, so many students do qualify that the
government has rewarded it to all students so that the more economically privileged
students are not ostracized. Approximately 440 students come from single parent
homes (44%) and 350 live below the poverty line (35%).
