Time: 50 Minutes
Max. Marks: 30
Answer ALL Questions
PART-A (6X1=6 Marks)
1. Draw Energy balance and efficiency diagram of a chemical rocket engine and define the
following:
i. Internal efficiency,
ii. propulsive efficiency,
iii. thermal efficiency and
iv.
overall efficiency

PART-B (2X12=24 Marks)

Answer any two questions
1. A chemical rocket is used for launch into earth orbit. At the end of the combustion the
stagnation temperature is 3000K and the stagnation pressure is 20MPa. The molecular mass of
the combustion product is 26 kg//kmol. The gases expanded isentropically as an ideal gas
mixture with a specific heat ratio of 1.2 and the throat diameter is 0.1m. At sea level determine
the following: Exhaust jet velocity, Area ratio, Specific Impulse, Characteristic velocity,
optimum thrust coefficient and optimum rocket thrust.
