    STEERING FAILURE
    CATEGORY :Critical Operations

    D 020.03

    RETENTION PERIOD : NA

    TO BE READ BY ALL DECK OFFICERS AS PART OF JOINING FAMILIARIZATION

    Yes/No/Na

    1 Check alarms, inform engine room / Duty Engineer, call Master.


    2 If at sea on auto-pilot, try out alternative auto-pilot motor and /or steering motor.
    3 If on hand steering, try alternative steering motor.
    4 If no response, switch to non follow-up mode and try out.
    5 instruct engine room (Duty Engineer if UMS) to rush to steering flat, establish
    communication and engage emergency steering. Bring engine to manoeuvring status IF
    NECESSARY SOUND GENERAL ALARM. Get a Deck Officer and helmsman to steering flat
    soonest. (This may be the OoW if Master takes command)
    6 In the unlikely event of all steering motors failing, or the steering hydraulic system failing,
    take action by slowing down, stopping or using Emergency stop if a collision or grounding
    situation is arising.
    7 Display N.U.C. Signals.
    8 If in shallow waters call immediate anchor stations and prepare anchors.
    9 If moving towards danger consider letting go anchors, lowering /dredging anchors, in
    consultation with Master.
    10 Inform nearest Coast Guard and/or coast radio station.
    11 Update ships position.
    12 If in traffic, broadcast warning on VHF. Use whistle / Aldis lamp to warn close traffic. Report
    to local Coast Guard and coast station, if applicable.
    13 Enter in movement book the time when steering failed, other pertinent information.
    14 If steering loss is for more than a few minutes, then re-broadcast navigational warnings at
    regular intervals Report to coast radio station and Coast Guard, if applicable.
    Ship Specific items

    IF ON HAND STEERING, IN PILOTAGE WATERS AND/ OR TRAFFIC, MASTER WILL DISPATCH OOW SOONEST TO
    STEERING FLAT, ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION,STEER LOCALLY WHILE MASTER WILL MANOEUVRE VESSEL TO
    BEST EFFECT AND SOUND GENERAL ALARM
