PREJUDICE
The definition of prejudice is the one put forth by the famous Harvard psychologist, Gordon Allport,
who published The Nature of Prejudice in 1954: "Prejudice is an antipathy based on faulty and
inflexible generalization. It may be felt or expressed. It may be directed toward a group or an individual
of that group".
The keyword in this definition is hostile attitude or "antipathy". It is a word which Webster's
Dictionary easily defines as a "negative feeling",

In this case, people could be prejudiced against others when people emotional reaction is
negative to them. they will have feelings of scorn or dislike to others, of fear and aversion, as well as
various forms of antipathetic conduct : such as talking aginst people, discriminating against them, or
attacking them with violence. Then, people who have negative emotional reaction will judge others
unwarranted whenever it lacks basis in fact.

B. PREJUDICE ACTIONS
Allport wrote an influential work called The Nature of Prejudice(1979). In his book he linked
prejudice and categorical thinking, claiming that prejudice is in part a normal process for humans.
According to him, "The human mind must think with the aid of categoriesOnce formed, categories
are the basis for normal prejudgment. We cannot possibly avoid this process. Orderly living depends
upon it. "
He classifies prejudice into three broad levels: Cognitive Level of Prejudice refers to our perceptions
and beliefs and is based on logical and rational thoughts; Emotional Level of Prejudice refers to
prejudiced feelings which are aroused by expression or thoughts; Action-Orientation Level of
Prejudice is a predisposition to act in favor of or against certain groups.
Allport's action-orientation levels simply mean that people are predisposed to prejudice and may not
know it until circumstances present themselves in such a way that their prejudices emerge.
