THE AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD

A. The goal: helping learners to respond correctly to stimuli through shaping and
reinforcement.
B. The role of teacher:

1. The teacher directing and controling the language behavior of students.


2. The teacher is also responsible for providing her students with a good model for
imitation.
C. The role of student:
1. The students are imitators of the teachers model or the tapes she supplis of model
speakers.
2. The students follow the teachers directions and repons as acurately and rapidly as
possible.
D. Basic rule:
1. The teacher use English in classroom instruction.
2. The teacher explains about new vocabulary and structural patterns through dialogs.
3. Language is drill (such as repetition, backward build-up, chain, substitution,
transformation, and question and answer).
4. Object = dialog.
5. Explicit grammar rules are not provided.

F. Class observation: 34 studens of beginning level English class in Mali.
G. Time: 60 x 5 a week.
H. Learning Strategies:
1. Students and teacher entire the classroom.
2. The teacher introduce a new dialog.
3. The teacher repeat the dialog twice by modeling it.
4. The SS repeat each line of the dialog several times.
5. The teacher uses backward build-up drill (expansion drill)
6. Students says the the role of Bill, teacher says Sallys lines, then switched.
7. The teacher devided the class into a half.
8. The teacher initiates a chain drill.
9. The teacher selects some students in pair to perform the dialog.
10. The teacher gives single slot drill by using the pictures.
11. The teacher say very good when the SS answer correctly.
12. The teacher continue the drill by another sentence in the dialog with the subject
pronoun.
13. The teacher gives multiple slot drill by changing pronoun and places.
14. The teacher gives subtitution drills followed by transformation drill.
15. The teacher poses the question to selected individuals rapidly without pausing.
16. The teacher return to the dialog above.
17. The SS devided into two parts.
18. The lesson end for the day. The teacher prepare material for next meeting.
