Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)

Lesson Plan Format


For the MoPTA, this Lesson Plan Format is designed to help a teacher candidate develop
well-planned and structured lessons. This format also can help a teacher candidate better
understand and design meaningful daily lessons that can positively enhance his or her
instructional practice and students learning. This Lesson Plan Format is intended for use
in conjunction with Tasks 2, 3, and 4.

Learning Objectives/Goals
The lessons objectives and intended learning outcomes appropriate for meeting
curricular and student needs
Identify who gave the Gettysburg Address (3)
List where the speech was given, after what battle, and in what war (3)
Summarize the content of the Gettysburg Address (10)
Relate the content of the Gettysburg Address to modern day (2)

Lesson Structure and Procedures


Sequence of events of the lesson elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson,
e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion)
Before: State Objectives, posted
Bell Ringer with Essential Question(s): Lincoln Memorial Picture w/ questions
posted from Gettysburg slides set:
Identify the man represented
Describe the statue
List some words that stand out to you
Relate the words & man to a historical event
Explain what is significant about the things in this picture
3 minutes given for answers followed by student answers and teacher follow up
questions for 7-10 minutes
During: Introduction with Mini Lesson:
1. Abraham Lincoln overview slide, basic facts
2. Civil War overview slide, Who/What/When/Where/Why
3. Battle of Gettysburg overview slide
4. During slide presentation and discussion pass out copies of speech
5. Gettysburg Address overview slide
6. Introduce Read Aloud Activity: students to listen to first 2 stanzas of speech
7. Gettysburg Address video slide: play video until 0:56, end of second stanza
8. Catch: Teacher asks questions to assess understanding/comprehension,
specifically of objectives 1 & 2
9. Introduce Question the Author Activity: Ask various students to read from
stanza 3, from highlighted stop to highlighted stop.
10. After each stop, ask quality questions in regards to what the sentence read
means and how it relates to modern day
11. Debrief & Closure: Reread speech in its entirety & summarize discussion
After: Restate objectives
Exit Ticket/Catch 2 slide: Students answer 5 questions on the Gettysburg Address
covering the objectives

Extensions
