SEQUENCEOFLESSONPLANS

Day1:
Thefirstdayofthisunitisallabouthelpingstudentslearnwhatacommunityisandwhatmakestheir
communityspecial.Wewilluseavarietyofhandsonactivitiestobuildagoodfoundationforourstudyof
communities.Wewillstartbybrainstormingalistofpeople,places,andactivitiesinourcommunity.Second,wewill
learnafewnewvocabularywordsincludingcommunity,construction,citizen,andtransportation.Next,Iwillexplain
ourscrapbookprojectfortheunit,showexamplepages,andprovidestudentswithworktimetocompletetheOnthe
MapandHomeSweetHomepagesintheirbook.

Day2:Thefocusoftheseconddayistypesofcommunities.Wewillstartthislessonoffbydiscussingthreenew
vocabularywordsurban,rural,andsuburban.Iwillask,"WhattypeofcommunitydoyouthinkPlattevilleis?Why?"
tofacillitateaclassdiscussion.Afterwediscussthethreeprimarytypesofcommunities,weusedrealisticpicturesto
practicerecognizingthedifferencesincommunities.Wewillfinishday2byworkingonourscrapbook.Aftera
discussionaboutthemajorroadsinandaroundPlatteville,thestudentwillbegiventheopportunitytodrawtheirown
caranddriverslicenses.

Day3:Daythreeisdesignedtogivestudentsacloserlookatthehelpersintheircommunity.Wewilltakealookat
someofthecommoncommunityhelpersaswellbrainstormalistofhelpersinPlatteville.Tointroducecommunity
helpers,wewillreadthebook,"Helpersinmycommunity."Afterthestory,wewillhaveaclassdiscussionaboutother
helpersthatworkinPlattevillethatarenotmentionedinthestory.
Next,Iwillteachmykidsafuncommunityhelper
songtogivethemawaytoremembersomeofthethingsthatpeopleinourcommunityhelpuswitheveryday!Finally,

studentswillgettofocusononefamiliarcommunityhelperbycompletingthe"Doctor,Doctor"page
inthescrapbook.
Thedramaticplayareawillalsobesetupasadoctorsoffice.

Day4:
Onthefinaldayoftheunit,wewilllearnaboutthegoodsandservicesinourcommunity.Wewilltalkaboutthe
differencebetweena"good"anda"service"andpracticesortingthem.Wewilltakeanindepthlookatgrocerystores
andrestaurantsandidentifythegoodsandservicesprovidedattheseplaces.
Afterourdiscussionofgoodsand
ser
vices,studentswillpracticedistinguishinggoodsfromservicesbycompletingasortingactivity.Studentswill
completethe"Let'sgoouttoEatPage"togetthemthinkingabouttherestaurantsintheircommunityandthegoodsand
servicesthatareofferedthere.Studentswillcompletethe"Shop'tillYouDrop"pagetogetthemthinkingaboutthe
storesintheircommunityandthegoodsandservicesthatareofferedthere.
