CONCEPT OR PRINCIPLE
Infectious disease like TB, which can be spread through droplet infection, pose a serious threat to
groups of persons living in close proximity to one another; as such, there seems to be a strong link
between poverty and the spread of TB

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

Classification

Learning Type

State the type of pathogen that causes TB

Knowledge

Cognitive

Organize relevant information from resource

material to write a short story

Create

Cognitive

Share ideas and opinions about a particular topic,

in contribution to an assigned task

Affective

Valuing

PROCESS SKILLS
During this lesson, students will be engaged in:
Identifying / formulating a problem
Designing and Planning an experimental procedure

Setting-up and executing experimental work

Observing and measuring

Recording of data and observations

Interpreting and evaluating data and observations

Communicating scientific ideas, observations and arguments

Applying scientific ideas and methods to solve qualitative and quantitative problems

Decision-making based on examination of evidence and arguments

Extracting from available information data relevant to a particular situation
ACTIVITIES

Introduction:
T writes the word TUBERCULOSIS on the blackboard
Ss comment on their knowledge of this disease
Ss told that the class will focus on the disease called Tuberculosis or TB
Development:
Ss are seated in pre-assigned groups consisting of one tutor and three tutees. Prior to class, tutors
researched TB and made notes for use in class. Each group receives hand-outs on TB to read.
While Ss are reading, T writes the following on the board:
Use the information from the hand-out, your text book and that provided by your tutor to plan and
then write a short story about a boy who contracts TB. Your story should end with the following
sentence: His family and friends could not believe things had turned out this way.
Ss prompted to ask questions about the task. Tutors reminded to review the contributions
provided and to provide adequate assistance for task completion. Ss participation assessed by T
during class. Short stories are collected at the end of the assigned period. Ss promised feedback on
stories at a later date
Consolidation:
Ss and T review the main points on the TB hand-out
Ss receive an Evaluation sheet to be completed at home

TEACHERS EVALUATION OF LESSON

TUTORS COMMENTS
A very creative approach to HFLE which integrates writing skills with Science. A good use of the Sage
on the Stage in a cooperative learning activity. What were the quality of the stories? What did students
think about this lesson?
