This is the heart

of the lesson plan. Be as specific as possible. This section
includes EVERYTHING!
1. Play the music video for the song They Were the Pilgrims from Songs
For Kids About The First Thanksgiving. (17) (5.1) Explain to the
students that this week, hey will be learning about how the holiday of
Thanksgiving was created.
2. Play the music video again. Encourage the children to sing along if they
can remember the words.
3. Interactive Read Aloud of The Story of the Pilgrims by Katharine Ross.
I.
Show children the cover of the book and the title. Tell them that
a pilgrim is a person who travels to a new land.
II.
Tell the children to let you know if there are any words in the
book that they do not understand. (1) (12)
III.
Read the first two pages. Then stop and ask the children, What
do you think it would be like to move to a new country with
your family? Have them discuss with their shoulder partner for
three minutes. (22) (2)
IV.
Read up until the part where the pilgrims get off the ship. Define
shallow and sparkling. (5) (2.1)
V.
Read the next page where the pilgrims build their house. Ask the
children what they think it would be like to live in one house
with all of your family and neighbors. Have them discuss with
their shoulder partner for three minutes. (22) (2)
VI.
Read until the part where the pilgrims have their feast. Define
rejoiced and delicious and celebrate.
VII. Ask children if they have ever celebrated Thanksgiving with
their families. Then have them turn to a shoulder partner and
talk about the last Thanksgiving they celebrated. If any children
have never celebrated Thanksgiving before, make sure they are
paired up with a classmate who has. (32) (2.4)
4. Write the following two sentences on the board: My favorite part of
the story of the pilgrims was and I never knew that Instruct
students to go make an entry in their reading journal in which they
finish both of these sentences. Encourage them to draw pictures to
support their text once they are finished writing. For ESOL and ESE
students who have a difficult time with this task, help them come up
with their sentence and write it for them, then have them complete their
illustration on their own. (31) (50) (1.1)
5. Bring class back together. Show them a picture of the timeline they are

SocialStudiesLesson/UnitPlanTemplate(precursortoTeacherWorkSample(TWS)inInternshipII)

about to start for the week. Explain how its going to work. (42) Pass
out one timeline paper for each child, have them write their name on it,
and have them place in in their desk or another out-of-the-way location
to use after the next lesson.
6. Explain to the children that when the pilgrims sailed on the mayflower,
they only had a little bit of room to take their stuff with them (if
possible, demonstrate the specific size using a box or bin). Give each
child a piece of paper labeled with I am going on the Mayflower. This
is what I will be bringing. and a plain brown paper bag. Tell them to
pretend that they are pilgrims who are about to set sail and they must
decide what to take with them. Have them glue the piece of paper to the
brown paper bag, make a list of stuff they want to bring with them on
the paper, and draw pictures of those things around the outside. The list
can be in the form of whole sentences or individual words. (16)
7. Tell the children that tomorrow, they are going to set sail on the
Mayflower. Play the song from step 1 again before moving on to the
next activity. (15)
