Welcome to week 1
DR. DARREN PAFFEY: Hello again. This week we're going to be looking at the nature of
language, beginning with the question: what exactly is language? What does it mean to learn
a language and why is it that some things seem really difficult and others much more
straightforward when we are learning a language? Professor Roumyana Slabakova will
introduce ideas from her current research on what it means to learn a language. And Dr.
Alasdair Archibald will offer some thoughts from his work and experience on some of the
other factors that can affect language learning, such as our motivation or the age we are
when we learn a language.
