An Etymological Dictionary of the

Urdu Language


(Introduction)
I am primarily concerned with the origins and derivations
of words, and not with their meaning or semantic
development. Some of the words, especia lly the
loan-words, possess such a deep cultural significance and
historical interest that their full treatment might easily
assume the form of short articles or papers. For instance,
the surprisingly varied and extensive use of the word
Diwan in the different languages of the East and the West,
can easily be made the subject of a doctoral dissertation.
