In this lesson Students will learn about the solar system through
researching a specific planet in groups in order to understand the content then
sharing their newly learned information with the class.
4.7 The student will investigate and understand the organization of the solar
system. Key concepts include:
4a) planets in the solar system;
4b) order of the planets in the solar system;
4c) relative sizes of the planets.
What are the specific features of each planet?
Students will be able to understand the order and size of each planet, and
describe unique features and attributes to the planet.
Planets, solar system, size, organization, exploration, shape, astronauts,
features, craters, moons
Computers/Ipads, posters, markers, note sheet template
KWL- chart about the solar system. Give them 5-8 minutes then discuss the
chart with the students.
1. Divide classroom into groups of 3. Each group recieves ipad, poster
and markers.
2. Students will have 25 min. to research and draws planet with info.
Give students the website links, and note sheet so they can fill it out
during research.
3. Help each group to make sure findings are correct and that they are
on-task.
Absent: give student completed note sheet for their reference and notes can be
used on make-up quiz.
Finish Early: help clean up, present first!
Groups will present their findings briefly (6 min each) with a visual and
presentation.
Formal: Next class students will write a scientific blog using their notes and
write about what they discovered on one specific planet!
Informal: Pop quiz on general info from each planet! Will count as quiz grade
Solar System test will be next week!
Video about general solar system, note sheet template for each student for
each planet, list of websites for each group to find information about their
specific planet.
What went well about this lesson? What didnt go according to plan? What
would you do differently next time?
