Public Relations Gap

Spark is an innovative nonprofit learning center and community space located in the West

Central neighborhood of Spokane, Washington. The organizations mission is to connect people of all
ages to opportunities for learning and provide access to educational resources. Spark accomplishes this
through a variety of service offerings, community programs and events, including workshops for
children and adults. The organizations community programs and events are designed to inspire, spread
new ideas, and celebrate the talent in the West Central neighborhood as well as the greater Spokane
community.
The primary public relations gap is a lack of awareness about Spark within the greater Spokane
area. Spark offers a wide variety of engaging programs and events year-round, yet many Spokane
residents are not aware of the organization or events. Awareness for the organization can be furthered
using an array of tactics, including an open house for city officials and building relationships with local
businesses. By increasing awareness about Spark in the Spokane area, residents can expand their
knowledge through workshops and connect with their community.
The secondary public relations gap is the lack of awareness and common misconceptions in the
West Central neighborhood about Spark. While Spark is open to everyone, some West Central residents
mistakenly believe that Spark is only open to residents of the more upscale Kendall Yards development.
Due to Sparks target audience is children in the West Central neighborhood, correcting this
misconception is important. Awareness and understanding for the organization can be increased using
several tactics, including the Spark in the Park event, which is scheduled to take place in June 2016,
and a presence at the Kendall Yards Night Market this summer. Spark is a wonderful addition to the
West Central neighborhoodall Spokane residents should take advantage of what is offered.
