CHILDREN
CHARACTERS

ROBERTA (BOBBIE)

-The eldest of the three children and her mathers


favourite child
-Very sensitive to her mothers temperamant and acts
accordingly around her
-A devoted responsible and considerate daughter and
sister who
shows love and concern
-Caring and conscientious ( speaks to the doctor about
reducing the charges for her mothers medical care)
-Daring (climbs on to a train engine to get the engine
driver s attention)
-Grateful (makes toffee for Bill and Jim as a token of
appreciation for their role in repairing the toy engine)
-Has faith in the father and is convinced that he is not
guilty of any wrongdoing

PETER

-The middle child and only boy and has ambition of


becoming an engineer
-Resourceful (helps himself to the coal from the railway
station and considers it mining, rather than stealing)
-Mischievous but generous ( plays pranks on his younger
sister and teases both the girls but agrees to part with
half of his engine as a birthday gift to Roberta)
-Proud and protective (is mortified whan the girls admit
that thay have known about his coal-mine secret all
along and does not want his sisters to be involved in
stealing the coal)
-Brave (pusher Roberta aside and rushes into the burning
barge to save the baby)
-Honourable (will not accept the bribe from the
signalmen)

PHYLLIS
-The youngest child, innocent and childish and always
speaks her
mind

-Imaginative (believes that the train will take their love to


their father if thay wave add at it as it passes by landslip
near the tunnel)

-Thoughtful (obtains bread and butter from Perks to serve


to the Old Gentleman during their meeting with him at the
station )

-Thoughtful and affectionate ( is not afraid to physically


expressher effection)

Mother

-a homely woman who takes good care of the children


-is ready to play with the children
-reluctant to share with her children the bad news of
father being imprisoned
-works hard to write stories to earn some money to
support the family when her husband is arrested
-a patient woman who tries to help her husband when he
is arrested for spying
-believes that her husband is innocent of the crime
