Separation Through Static Electricity

Goals/Objectives:

To teach the students about static electricity

Safety Concerns:

No real concerns, both salt and pepper are edible

Estimated Time Required:

20 minutes, including set up and clean up

Supplies Needed:

Salt
Pepper
Plastic spoon
Wool cloth or piece of wool clothing

Instructions:

Measure out a teaspoon each of salt and pepper

Mix together as much as possible with the spoon
Rub spoon on the piece of wool cloth
Hold spoon about an inch above the pile of salt and pepper. Pepper should jump up and
cling to the spoon.

Follow-Up:

For the follow-up, you will complete the last questions on the worksheet. Then talk about
static electricity and the reason that the spoon picked up the pepper.
