DigestiveSystemLabReport

ThislabreportwillbeaddressingtheDigestivesystem.Thesalivaryglandsinmammalsare
exocrineglands,glandswithducts,thatproducesaliva.Theyalsosecreteamylaseadigestive
enzymethatbreaksdownstarchintomaltoseandglucose.Inhumansandsomeother
mammalsthesecretionisalphaamylasealsoknownasptyalin.ThemouthisknownastheOral
CavityortheBuccalCavity.Thechiefinstructorsofthemoutharetheteethwhichtearandgrind
ingestedfoodintosmallpiecesthataresuitablefordigestion.Thetonguepositionsandmixes
foodandalsocarriessensoryreceptorsfortaste.Thepalateseparatesthemouthfromthe
nasalcavityallowingseparatepassagesforairandfood.Thesestructuresalongwiththelips
areinvolvedintheformationofspeechsoundsbymodifyingthepassageofairthroughthe
mouth.

Theesophagusisalongthinandmusculartubethatconnectsthepharynxtothestomach.It
formsanimportantpieceofthegastrointestinaltractandfunctionsastheconduitforfoodand
liquidsthathavebeenswallowedintothepharynxtoreachthestomach.Foodisswallowedand
passesthroughtheesophagustothestomachwherethemajorityofdigestiontakesplace.

Thesmallandlargeintestinesplayamajorroleinthebody.Thesmallintestineismadeupof
theDuodenum,JejunumandIleum.Thelargeintestineconsistsofthececum,colon,ascending
colon,transversecolon,descendingcolon,sigmoidcolon,andtherectum.Theliveristhe
largestglandinthebodyweighingabout1.5kginanadultbody.Theliverplaysamajorrolein
thedigestivesystem.Thepancreasproducesamixofenzymesthattogetherarecalled
pancreaticjuiceandthejuicehelpsneutralizeacid.Thegallbladderstoresthebileproducedby
theliver.Gallbladdersharesavesselcalledthecommonbileductwiththeliver.
