Winding down: As we approach the end of
the 2014-2016 biennium, you may think that we
are winding down, but, we are doing just the
opposite. Your 2016-2018 officers are
preparing for participation at the State
Convention in Frisco, the International
Convention in Nashville, the Area Workshop in
Marble Falls, and they are also planning
programs for the coming year.
Your input is important to program
planning. Please contact any of your officers
with program suggestions and with venues for
our meetings. And, be sure to let me know if
you have a committee preference, if you would
like to chair a committee, if you would like to
give an inspiration or blessing at a meeting, or if
you would like to help with door prizes. With
everyones help, no job is too big.
Remember, Nu Chapter isnt winding down---it
is just recharging and getting a head start on the
new biennium and now is your chance to hop on
and help Nu continue to shine.

FYI
RETROACTIVE DIPLOMAS
With the change in required exit exams to get a
high school diploma, some states are granting
high school diplomas retroactively to students
who failed the state exit exams but who passed
the coursework which the state now requires. In
the past nine months, Georgia has retroactively
awarded high school diplomas to over 17,000
students. Texas has awarded 4,000 diplomas
and anticipates that an additional 12,000 will be
eligible to get retroactive diplomas. \Some
other states that have passed legislation to
allow students who did not pass formerly
required exit exams but passed end of course
exams to get high school diplomas are
California, South Carolina, Arizona and Alaska.
If your state has dropped high school
graduation tests and you know of students who
might be eligible for a retroactive diploma;
contact your state Department of Education.

We have brought in several new members who

have thrived in our chapter because of your
mentoring skills. We now have some lovely
chapter tee shirts that will identify us as members
of a unique society. We have formed new
friendships with members of our surrounding
chapters and have enjoyed their fellowship at joint
socials.
Joining us at our meetings, have been two Area
Coordinators-- Laura Packard and Carol Rose, two
State Presidents---Nancy Newton and Marilyn
Gregory, a Past State President, Joanne Davis, a
Past International President, Evelyn Barron, and we
have been/are extremely lucky to have a Past State
President (from New Mexico), Nadyne Gartman as
a member of our chapter. Each of these ladies has
helped provide different light into the many
aspects of our society.

State President Marilyn and our own, Sandi

Dear Friends,
Thank you for all your help, encouragement and
enthusiasm during this past biennium. Together,
we have accomplished new and exciting
things. We have attended and participated
actively in many events including a
memorable Field Trip to the new Science Mill
Museum in Johnson City. Weve hosted Afternoon
Teas where members have had a chance to visit
with each other in genuine fellowship.

Awards from State have been presented to very

deserving committees and membersYOU! Yes,
your hard work and determination has paid off and
I thank you. Nu Chapter is truly composed of
amazing key women educators.

We have reached out in our communities and

schools by supporting our teacher members who
honored our military veterans with breakfasts,
speeches and many other activities including
listening to the Kitchen Band (composed of
residents of a retirement home) perform patriotic
songs at a local school.

Preparing for the 2016-2018 biennium, let us not

lose this momentum and let us continue to help
our chapter grow and thrive. With all of us
working together, I know we will continue to
succeed as we move towards the 100th
anniversary (in 2029) of our organization, The Delta
Kappa Gamma Society International.

We have provided school supplies for our still

teaching members and their classrooms, donated
personal hygiene products for the ladies at the
Womens Shelter, provided handmade quilts and
pillows for the residents of a local life care facility
and we have helped young ladies beginning their
Student Teaching days by awarding our
grant-in-aid, supported by your generous
contributions during our basket raffle events.

Thank you.

Sandra

Norma is the middle sister. She always wears a split

riding skirt as she goes about her farm chores. From the
first she cautions Constance to let the wrecked buggy go
and not get involved. She is right, but then it s too late.
Norma is a practical, very down to earth worker bee who
disapproves of almost everything Constance does.
Fleurette is much younger than her sisters and,
consequently, spoiled and coddled. She is like a
butterfly living with them, all lightness and drama and
eager for anything to break the monotony, even Kaufman.
She wouldnt have thought twice about waiting with a gun
on a dark desperate night, but Constance wont let her go.
The whole episode is theater to her.

Book Review by Mary

Girl Waits With Gun
Amy Stewart

Stewart bases the story on fact but embellishes it with

additional characters and events to fill in the blank spots.
Constance Kopp actually did become the first woman
deputy in New Jersey. She and her sisters are good
examples of women on the cusp between the Victorian
and Modern Ages.

How many titles have Girl in them these days? And at

35, the main character of this Amy Stewart novel is not
technically a girl. She does, however, wait with a gun on a
dark, deserted city street in order to trap a would be
kidnapper and save her younger sister.

Girl Waits with Gun is an entertaining novel about a real

life family of girls and the bully who really was out to get
them.

This novel about the Kopp sisters is based on real events

that occurred in 1914 and 1915 in New Jersey. The girls
try to recover damages to their buggy when Henry
Kaufman, a silk merchant, plowed into them. First they
ask. Then they sue. How Kaufman responds is the
framework of the novel, for he is a ruthless braggart used
to having his own way. He and his gang terrorize the
three sisters using Black Hand threatening notes
heaved through the Kopp farmhouse windows in the dead
of night. Once they attempt to set fire to the home.

Amy Stewart will be conducting two sessions at the

Master Gardener State Conference in May, for one of her
non-fiction books is Wicked Plants, about how certain
plants have been responsible for impacting history. I will
get to hear her, and Im taking my book for her to sign.

What makes the story entertaining, however, is the three

girls. They have been reared by a paranoid Austrian
mother who tried to protect them from the outside world,
telling them fearsome stories of how everyone was out to
get them. After she dies, they remember her words, but
decide to take risks because they are morally right,
because they must protect themselves, because they
actually begin to enjoy a little excitement in their
lives.Constance is the eldest and the one who takes risks,
under the guidance of Sheriff Heath, who teaches her to
shoot both rifle and pistol. We view the world through her
eyes, and she is sympathetic to the plight of others,
fiercely courageous about protecting her sisters, and
humorous in her running commentary about both her
sisters and those she meets in her detective pursuits.

April meeting at Miller Middle School, San Marcos,

was entitled, Meet an Author, which we did by
meeting Linda Owen, San Antonio, formerly of San

was a delightful speaker who encouraged those of us
with the desire to write to just start!
During the business meeting we chose which of the
offered DKG shirts we desired to purchase. The Tee
Shirt Committee did an outstanding job! On the
committee were Jenny, Bonnie, Robin, and Dolores.

What took you so long? in going to one. I
hope you will be present at one, soon.

Wes and I attended the one for Nu Beta, in New
Caney, Texas. Two new chapters in less than
a year, with two more in the next two
