Chapter 5-3: PERSUASIVE WRITING PROMPT

Persuade someone to take either the overland route, the sea route, or the land and
sea route to California to find gold! Write it as an advertisement for the chosen
route. In your advertisement, you should convince your reader to do what you are
asking. In order to do that successfully, you must use persuasive vocabulary that
sells your idea. You must also use counter-arguments (bring up points from the
other side) in order to convince them that what you are saying is correct. Use the
box below to brainstorm your ideas. Create your final draft on the paper provided.

Letter format heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature

The route you took to get to California
Where you live and what you eat everyday
The type of labor, or work, you do, and if you have had any success
What tools and supplies you bought to use
The dangers and the harsh living conditions
The types of people you have met and the new friends you have made

Your rough draft should be completed on the lines provided below. Your final letter will be
written on the paper provided. Your final letter should be 2 paragraphs long, at least 5
sentences in each paragraph. You can self edit or have a peer help you with the editing
process.
