Day 3 (1 hour) 11:00 12:00
Enthusiastic About: Learning about the genre of biographies and applying knowledge of sounds, letters, and words to better understand texts. Materials: GWC graphic organizer, Storytown textbook, PowerPoint slideshow
Objectives:
The students will apply phonics and spelling
skills to decode vowel digraphs -ee and -ea. The students will summarize text features and key story details into a graphic organizer.
comprehension via a whole brain approach with grade appropriate text.
Procedure with Amount of Time Stated for Each Activity:
The class will finish their The Life of George Washington Carver (GWC) graphic organizers. The teacher will display the graphic organizer on the Polyvision board and ask guiding questions to elicit responses from students. Student responses will be used to formulate information for the graphic organizer. Students will participate in a whole brain reading strategy of The Life of George Washington Carver via the crazy professor method. Students will be paired together (one strong reader paired with a struggling reader) and will take turns being either a reader or an actor. Using the student textbook, one child reads slowly and dramatically while the other child acts out the story according to what their partner is reading. The teacher will randomly notify partners to switch roles throughout the activity. As partners finish their reading, they will join the teacher at the front of the room to engage in a summarizing activity. The teacher will display a slideshow review of robust vocabulary and will ask corresponding questions to enhance understanding of the vocab (modeling when necessary). To check for understanding the students will be asked a series of fill in the blank questions at the conclusion of the slideshow.
