Metallica is arguably the most influential Rock band of the last 30 years. From its forming in 1981, to
now, the group has influenced many other popular bands such as Alice in Chains, Sound Garden,
Nickelback, and Limp Bizkit. Through this influence on other artists, and its own fans, Metallica has
been able to influence the culture associated with music and the general public. Metallica was able to do
this through their influence on other bands, creation of their own path, and early entry into the mainstream
media.

Metallica was able to influence culture in many ways, one of those being their effect on other bands
that came after them. Because Metallica was able to influence other bands, they were also able to
influence many other fans, instead of just their own. The fans are the culture, there is a culture associated
with each type of people, who listen to certain types of music. There is a Country music culture, and a
Rock culture, so on and so forth. Metallica just so happened to influence Alternative bands, Grunge
bands, and other metal bands (rateyourmusic.com).
Another way Metallica was able to influence music and culture was by creating their own path. The
band never conformed to any specific form of rock; the only thing that never changed was that it was
always heavy music that they were making. Sometimes they changed so radically that it hurt them in the
short run, such as when they released a very different album called St. Anger. Even then, their constant
changing and carelessness about what the industry of music thought has kept them alive for 35 years.

Metallica has also been able to influence music and culture by entering the mainstream media early
on. When MTV started to show up on cable TV in the late 80s and early 90s, the band was right their
ready to put their music videos onto the channel. Doing this made heavy music much more popular, and
it brought it out of just the Rock culture, but also into the more visual areas. Also, following the release
of their self-titled Black Album in 1991, Metallica had songs playing on FM radio, something that hadnt
really happened for them before. This really brought them into the spot light, but it also changed the way
the world viewed their music, and the culture of fans associated with it. Now, heavy metal and other
heavy music wasnt such a taboo and non-mainstream thing. In a Newspaper article from 1994, the
author states that Metallicas entry into mainstream media outlets such as MTV and the Radio have a big
impact on not only adults, but also students (Joe stueesy).

Overall, Metallica was the most influential rock band to culture in the last 30 years mainly because of the
bands influence on other musicians, creation of their own path, and early entry into mainstream media.
Although many people dont think of Metallica as the most influential to culture, they truly are. After all,
they have to be, theyve been making music for thirty five years and are still together. That requires the
culture that they influenced to support them back.
