Xanadu
Ed Traftons interpretation of Xanadu portrays how ones dream can eventually be
brought to life through hard work and determination. The story follows Sonny, an aspiring artist,
who desires to establish his very own roller skating disco. Along his hectic journey, Sonny runs
into Kira, a girl who claims to be from Australia. As the two become acquaintances, they realize
that they have a special connection with one another. They quickly fall in love and both embark
on a journey to create their very own roller skating disco. As the two character discover their
incredible love for one another, Kiras true. identity is revealed. Sonny discovers that Kira is a
demigod, which grants her immortality but prohibits her from loving humans. Thus, the couple
faces multiple challenges that test their love and willpower of reaching their own goals and
aspirations.
Xanadu possesses many poetic elements. For instance, a key theme throughout the play is
the power of love. Xanadus musical component provides an incredible emphasis on the love that
is portrayed between the characters. During certain scenes, the actors would sing to each other to
express their emotions and set the mood of the sequence. In addition, the most poetic message
Xanadu presents is its underlying theme, which is to never give up on your dreams and
aspirations. Even though Sonny faces multiple obstacles that hinder his dream from coming to
life, he never gave up. Instead, Sonny continues to defy the odds and overpowers all of his
adversities. Although Xanadu is only a highschool play, it has many mature themes throughout
the play which will stay with me forever.
