The Hound of the Baskervilles
The Sacramento Theatre Companys adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles presents
many empowering performances, along with an amazing plot. The play opens with Sir Charles
Baskerville being chased and killed by the infamous hound, which was cursed upon the family.
As Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. John Watson hear about the story, they decide they must
begin their investigation upon the murder and the curse of the Baskervilles. However, as they
continue their investigation, other questions are raised regarding the murders. The investigators
question whether if there is even a curse, or is it merely a diabolical murderer that is behind these
tragic incidents.
The Hound of the Baskervilles had the greatest performances I have ever seen in a live
theatre. I find it quite poetic that each individual actor completely sold their character, which
added to the amazing atmosphere of the play. I saw each actor as their own character, rather than
people putting on a play for an audience. In addition, I found the big reveal at the end of the play
quite poetic because it teaches the audience that everyone is capable of deceiving others. It also
shows that our preconception of people can be used against us in various ways. We never truly
know what other people are thinking or plotting. The people that we consider our best friends
could be potentially plotting something against us. Furthermore, the play shows that we should
not fall victim to our emotions so quickly because sometimes our emotions can blind us from the
truth. Although emotions are necessary for humanity, we should also recognize the negatives that
come along with our love and emotions for others, and not be so easily blinded by them.
