HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)
URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR SPRING 2016
SERVICE LEARNING & LEADERSHIP CONTRACT DRAFT
Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths (Gallup Talents/StrengthsQuest and/or VIA Character Strengths) in an organizational/interpersonal setting that aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URIs Center for Student Leadership Development. Activity: I participated in the University of Rhode Islands Welcome Day 2016 as a Leadership Ambassador. Evidence: As evidence that I participated as a Leadership Ambassador, I have the nametag I wore at welcome day. Annotation: Annotation is an outcome- based descriptive detailing your service activity, similar to descriptive notes and is written upon completion of your activity. The activity that I feel I would be able to use my strengths and values to the best of my ability would be the Welcome Day booth. My top strengths of activator and significance will allow me to be able to make sense of the task at hand and follow through with what I am supposed to do. Having values of humor and bravery will allow me to be able to approach people and make them feel comfortable when talking about the institute and the minor. After working the welcome day event, I have learned how to properly advertise the Leadership Institute and Minor. Welcome day is an event where accepted students for the upcoming freshman class come to URI and every club and organization on campus have booths filling the inside of the Ryan Center. There are academic breakout sessions and residential and academic tours as well. It is a day for incoming freshman to decide whether URI is the perfect place for them. I believe that the leadership booth is extremely beneficial to incoming students. This booth has the ability to inform students of the leadership institute and minor before even committing to the school. This could potentially change how students see URI and the advantages of coming here. Having to use my value of bravery and walking up to people was nerve-racking at first, however after talking to a couple of potential students, I got used to it. I was able to use my other value of humor to break the ice and not make the conversations as awkward. My knowledge of the relational leadership model allowed me to be inclusive when talking to others. I listened to things they said such as what they want to major in and where they are from and was able to understand their point of views for why they would want to do leadership. I was able to explain to people what the institute is like and the affect it had on me as a new college student, and why I took FLITE. Being involved in leadership has
allowed me to become more involved in activities at URI such as Save the Bay and becoming a leadership ambassador. Student Signature: Alison Pappas
