Curriculum Title: English Language Arts Grade 1

Utah State Standard: Reading Literature Standard 3
Objective (s):
The objective of this lesson is to help the students understand and use basic concepts
and skills.
Materials:
Frederick, by Leo Lionni
Speech bubble shaped paper
Crayons
Sticky Tack
Intended Learning Outcomes: (same as objectives)
The objective of this lesson is to help the students understand and use basic concepts
and skills.
Instructional Procedures:
1. Give each student a sheet of white drawing paper in the shape of a speech bubble.
Have each student draw or paint the scene they visualized, a place they would like to
remember on the gray days of winter.
2. As students complete their drawings in the cartoon bubble, they are added to the
white board to be part of the story. Have each of the children share what they drew in
their bubbles.
3. Read over the story and enjoy the fact that each response is different, just as each
person is different, but that all of the responses are an important part of the whole story.
Make connections with Frederick in the story. Even though he had different ideas than
others, he had an important contribution to make. Have the students identify who the
characters are, where they are in the story, what their problem is, and how they solved
it.
Family Connections: (take home activity)

The childrens at home activity is to read a book with a parent. The parent then needs to
help the child practice identifying who the characters are, where they are, what the
problem is, and how the problem was solved.
Assessment Plan: (how do you plan to assess whether or not students gained the
skill/concept?)
I am going to ask questions after reading the story in order to gauge if the students
comprehended the story.
