Date: 3/2/16

Group Size: 21

Subject/Lesson Topic: Mathematics/Time to the Half Hour

Objectives: (TLW:)
Students will be able to tell time to the half hour on an analog clock
Students will learn to tell time to the half hour by using the term half past the hour
Standards/GLEs: 1. MD B 3. Tell and write time in hours and halfhours using analog and
digital clocks.
Contextual Factors:
1. Classroom contains a student with an IEP who has a developmental delay and an attention
deficit
2. A few students who are low in math and need help doing the lessons
Teacher Materials/Resources:
Wind up Analog Clock/ mini wind up analog clocks
Go Math Online Game/Lesson
Student Materials/Resources: Go Math workbooks
Technology Integration:
Promethean Board
Computer
Family/Community Connection or Extension:
Send home a letter encouraging parents to practice time at home
Pre-Assessment: After reading the standard and collaborating with my teacher, we came up with
learning time to the half hour because she would do a lesson the day before on time to the hour.

In order to plan instruction I used game to pre-assess the students on time to the hour and she
helped me plan time to the half hour using the wind up analog clock.
Lesson Procedure and Activities:
Introduction: Pre-assess the students by pulling up the Go Math practice examples for time to
the hour. Have the whole class answer the time on the analog clock. Let individual students
come up and pick the correct time with the Promethean pen. Then do the same with the rest of
the class at their seats.
Activities: 1. Pull out the big Wind up Analog Clock to show the students. The clock is set at
2:00 Explain when the long blue minute hand goes around the whole clock it is 60 minutes or an
hour.
2. Ask the question: If I were to cut the clock in half, how many minutes would it be?
3. Explain since 30 minutes is half of the clock then half the time has passed.
4. Tell and ask the students: Watch as the minute hand moves to 30 minutes, the hour hand
moves from being on top of the 2 to between the 2 and 3. What conclusion can we make about
the hour hand?
5. After the students see the hour hand in between the numbers is half past, they will open the Go
math game and have the students get further examples.
6. The Go Math game will give times where students must answer, such as half past 2:00.
7. After the game students will open their workbook to 459 and I will explain the directions on
the page of circling where the time was. (4:00, between 4:00 and 5:00, or 5:00) After I read the
directions I do one.
8. Students will help me with the rest of the page.
9. Next flip the page where I will read directions and do the example. Look at the time on the
clock and answer by using Half past.
10. I then give the students each 2 clocks to answer so that I can assess them.
Closure: I will review time to the hour and time to the half hour on the Wind Up Analog Clock
with a few examples.

Differentiation: To accommodate for my lower level students, I will make sure that I model the
questions given to them on miniature wind up clocks. If still stuck I will go back and model time
to the hour first to make sure that concept has been grasped.
Formative Assessment/Evaluation: I will assess the students by giving them 2 clock problems
in their workbook where they must answer the clock time by using half past. Students
answers will be checked by my teacher and me to make sure they understood the lesson on their
own.
