Subject/Lesson Topic: Equivalent Fractions

Objectives: (TLW:) The student will be able to match equivalent fractions.
Standards/GLEs: 3.NF.A.3.B

Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3. Explain
why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Contextual Factors: The high student teacher ratio in this class does not allow for
sufficient teacher supervision during centers time. Centers activities must be either
self-correcting or operate independently.
Teacher Materials/Resources:
Precut, self-correcting flashcards, two sets, attached
Zip lock bags
Marker
Recording sheet, can be loose-leaf
Pencil or pen
Instructions sheet, attached
Student Materials/Resources: none
Technology Integration: Not applicable
Family/Community Connection or Extension: A note was sent home prior to
starting fractions, requesting donations of construction paper for other fraction
activities.
Pre-Assessment: Students showed difficulty with finding equivalent fractions
during instruction.
Lesson Procedure and Activities:
Introduction: Prior to centers, the teacher should write on the cards, the
fractions students need to practice. Materials will be made available during
centers time. The instructions (attached) should be read aloud, the first time the
center is used.
Activities: Students will work the center in pairs. Each student will take a set of
fraction cards. They will race against their opponent to match the cards. Each
card is cut to only match one other, to ensure correct responses. Students should
race multiple times, for additional practice.
Closure: The winner of the race will record their name on loose leaf.
Differentiation: The self-correcting cards allow any student to participate in this
activity.

Formative Assessment/Evaluation: The objectives of the lesson are met if the

student wins a race.

Instructions: Take out one set of flashcards. With a partner race to match all the
cards. The first one to match all their cards wins.
